Nicholas Brendon, Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Xander Harris, Dead at 54

Nicholas Brendon, known for his roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Criminal Minds, has passed away at the age of 54. His family confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter, stating he died peacefully in his sleep from natural causes.

I’ve been a huge fan of Nicholas Brendon since the beginning! Did you know he was born in 1971 as an identical twin? His twin brother, Kelly, even made a quick appearance on Buffy! I always admired how he took up acting to help overcome his stutter, and it was amazing to see him become a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America during Buffy‘s most popular years. As Xander Harris, he really helped make being a ‘geek’ cool in the ’90s. He joined the show in 1997 and stayed with it right through the very end. Over those seven seasons, Xander’s character had such a wild ride – dating demons, losing an eye, dealing with doppelgängers, and even briefly knowing everything about the U.S. military! It was incredible to watch.

Beyond his role as Buffy, Brendon also gained recognition for playing Kevin Lynch on Criminal Minds, a recurring love interest for Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness). He also appeared in the TV adaptation of Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential alongside a young Bradley Cooper, and in Psycho Beach Party, a film based on Charles Busch’s play.

In recent years, Nicholas Brendon faced legal issues and struggled with addiction, including arrests at conventions and an incident in 2015 where he assaulted his then-girlfriend, for which he pleaded guilty to criminal mischief. His family stated that he was receiving medical treatment and felt hopeful about his future. They ask for privacy as they mourn his death and remember him as a passionate and creative person. They expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support he received.
