Lisa Kudrow’s show, The Comeback, is returning for one last season, and it’s earned the highest Rotten Tomatoes score ever for a TV comedy.
Before it officially premieres on March 22nd, season 3 of The Comeback has already received a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a higher score than the show received for its first two seasons.
The final season is receiving rave reviews, with critics describing it as funny, heartfelt, and a perfect way to end the show. Many are also highlighting Lisa Kudrow’s performance as Valerie Cherish, calling it a standout moment in the series.
Season one of The Comeback received generally mixed to positive reviews, earning a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, critics responded much more favorably to the show’s second season in 2014, giving it an 86% rating.
As a big movie and TV fan, I remember when The Comeback first hit screens in 2005. It was interesting timing, coming right after Friends – the show everyone knows and loves – wrapped up its amazing ten-season run. It was cool to see Lisa Kudrow, who we all knew as Phoebe Buffay, take a more active role behind the scenes with this new series. She really got to be more involved in the creative process, which was a nice change after playing a character for so long.
I’m a huge fan, and it’s amazing to me that she doesn’t just star in The Comeback, but she actually built the whole thing with Michael Patrick King – you know, the guy behind Sex and the City! – and they both executive produce it alongside Dan Bucatinsky. It’s really impressive to see someone so involved on both sides of the camera.
HBO waited nine years to bring back The Comeback for a second season, and then another twelve years for its final season.
While Friends was on break, Lisa Kudrow appeared in films such as Easy A, The Girl on the Train, The Boss Baby, Booksmart, and Better Nate Than Ever. She also continued to work in television, with roles in shows like Web Therapy, Feel Good, Space Force, Time Bandits, and No Good Deed.
The Comeback follows Valerie Cherish, an actress whose career is losing steam, as she tries to revitalize her fame by appearing in both a reality TV show and a new comedy series.
Courteney Cox’s fellow actors in the show include Alex Buatinsky, Damian Young, Laura Silverman, Tim Bagley, Ella Stiller, Matt Cook, Jack O’Brien, Barry Shabaka Henley, Abbi Jacobson, John Early, Brittany O’Grady, Tony Macht, Zane Phillips, Andrew Scott, and Julian Stern.
The show has featured many well-known guests, including Andy Cohen, Chelsea Handler, Conan O’Brien, and RuPaul, and this time Fran Drescher will be joining them.
Since the original run of The Comeback, artificial intelligence has become much more advanced. This will be a key part of the third season, as the creators of Valerie’s new show are using AI to help write the scripts.
For the first time ever, a video podcast version of The Comeback will be available on HBO Max. Hosted by Evan Ross, the podcast features interviews with Lisa Kudrow, Brad King, and other cast members, offering a deeper look into the show’s stories and how it was made.
Courteney Cox, known for her role on Friends, has received Emmy nominations for her lead performance in The Comeback in both seasons the show aired. She also won a Gracie Award for Outstanding Female Lead in a Comedy Series for the same role.
The Comeback season 3 premieres Sunday, March 22 at 10:30 p.m. EDT on HBO and HBO Max.
