Line of Duty Season 7 Revival: Redeeming Season 6’s Disappointing Finale

Spoilers for Line of Duty ahead.

After a somewhat unsatisfying conclusion to its sixth season in 2021, the popular British police drama Line of Duty is returning for a seventh season. The show, which first aired on BBC Two in 2012, follows ongoing investigations within the police force.

Line of Duty centers on AC-12, a team within a police force dedicated to investigating other police officers. The show ended in May 2021, and most viewers thought it wouldn’t return. However, the BBC announced in November 2025 that a seventh season is planned, offering a chance to resolve the controversial ending of the previous season.

Line Of Duty Season 7 Is A Chance To Redeem 2021’s Disappointing Finale

The BBC has announced that Martin Compston, Vicky McClure, and Adrian Dunbar – the stars who play Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings – will return for a seventh season of Line of Duty, along with the show’s creator, Jed Mercurio. While there’s no confirmed release date yet, the new season will consist of six episodes and we have some early hints about the storyline.

Steve, Kate, and Ted are facing their toughest challenge yet, even though their unit, AC-12, has been restructured and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards. They’re investigating Inspector Dominic Gough (played by Tom Weston-Jones), who’s been accused of inappropriate behavior, but they suspect this might be a cover for a more serious issue.

A seventh season of Line of Duty would be fantastic, not only because fans enjoy the show, but also because it would give the series a chance to improve upon its somewhat underwhelming season six finale. The final episode of season six didn’t quite deliver the exciting conclusion viewers were hoping for.

Most fans consider Season 6 to be the weakest of the series, and the finale doesn’t improve things. The show feels unfocused, and the ending doesn’t bring it back on track. It’s a disappointing conclusion that highlights how diminished the AC-12 team has become, which only adds to the negative impression.

Line Of Duty Season 7 Still Can’t Take Back The Previous Finale’s Big Twist

No matter what happens in season 7 of Line of Duty, it can’t undo the controversial twist from season 6 that frustrated many viewers. The reveal of “The Fourth Man,” also known as “H,” as the last corrupt senior officer controlling the city’s criminal network, was particularly upsetting for fans.

The surprising reveal of the villain is Ian Buckells (Nigel Boyle), a character who’s been a minor, somewhat clumsy figure since the very beginning of the show. While unexpected, it feels a bit rushed, as if the writers didn’t have enough time to create a more fully developed antagonist.

While the events of the previous season of Line of Duty can’t be undone, the show’s seventh season has the potential to explore the characters further. Perhaps we’ll see more of Buckells’s connections to criminal groups while he’s in prison. There are many intriguing possibilities for where Line of Duty could go next.
