Jack Thorne, who wrote the Netflix series Adolescence, has cautioned viewers about Louis Theroux’s documentary, Inside the Manosphere, suggesting it may be disturbing.
This British series, told in four parts, follows the aftermath when 13-year-old Jamie is arrested for the murder of his classmate, Katie. The tragic event occurred after Katie rejected Jamie at school, and then continued to bully him online.
The show explores how a teenager’s beliefs about women were influenced by online communities known as incel culture and figures like Andrew Tate. It highlights the potential harm of social media algorithms and their impact on young people’s perspectives.
Louis Theroux’s documentary also looks at people who are sharing potentially harmful views online through podcasts and videos. Following the film, the director of the Netflix series Adolescence has voiced serious concerns.
Adolescence creator says the British government needs to do more after Louis Theroux’s Inside the Manosphere

Jack Thorne praised Louis Theroux’s documentary Inside the Manosphere as “brilliant” in an interview with the Independent at the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards. However, he also stated that the UK government needs to improve protections for children against harmful content from online creators.
The manosphere remains a significant issue, recently brought back into public focus by Louis Theroux’s insightful new documentary. However, addressing it is complex, and it doesn’t seem like the government is actively pursuing effective solutions, according to one observer.
So, Thorne’s point is that it’s awesome Netflix and other streamers are exposing the harmful stuff in the manosphere, but honestly, that’s not enough. We really need the government to step up and do something to protect kids from all the negativity it’s spreading. It’s cool to see the problem being talked about, but action is what’s really needed.

After the show ‘Adolescence’ came out in March 2025, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer admitted to the BBC that it was difficult to watch as a parent. However, he also stated that there’s no simple solution to the issues it raises, and that a single policy wouldn’t be enough to address everything.
He explained that the issue goes far beyond a single problem, stating it’s a matter of culture. Therefore, solving it requires a collective effort and open discussion. He expressed his satisfaction that the film Adolescence will be shown in schools for free, believing it’s important for young people to see it.
Netflix offered Adolescence to UK secondary schools for free through the Into Film+ streaming platform.
