Kirsten Dunst cast in A Minecraft Movie 2 after calling for film that doesn’t “lose money”

Kirsten Dunst will star as Alex in the upcoming Minecraft sequel, and fans are playfully encouraging her to earn a substantial paycheck after she expressed a desire for the movie to be financially successful.

Even though some critics weren’t impressed, the movie based on Minecraft was a huge success in 2025, bringing in over $950 million worldwide.

The movie became popular, especially with younger viewers, because short clips, funny memes, and references to Minecraft spread quickly online, giving it a second wave of attention on social media.

I’m a huge fan, and I totally get why Kirsten Dunst wanted to be part of this! She actually told ET last year that her son is a massive fan, and she really wanted to do a movie he’d be excited about – she said he’d be over the moon if she was in it, which is just adorable!

The actress not only received praise from her children, but also shared her desire to be part of a follow-up film in an interview with Town & Country last August. She playfully suggested she’d like to star in a movie that actually turns a profit.

Alex is a playable character in Minecraft, added to the game in 2014. She’s known for her red hair and green clothing, and was created as a female alternative to the character Steve.

She had a very brief, quick cameo at the end of the first movie, appearing as Steve (Jack Black) returned to reality. We only see her silhouette, and Kate McKinnon, a former Saturday Night Live cast member, provided the voice.

Now that Kirsten Dunst is joining the cast, the next movie will likely explore Alex’s character more fully. She’ll be acting alongside returning favorites like Jack Black as Steve, Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, and Danielle Brooks as Dawn.

Matt Berry and Jennifer Coolidge will reprise their roles. The announcement that Kirsten Dunst is joining the cast has generated a lot of buzz, and fans are praising her willingness to openly discuss being part of the project.

Someone on Reddit recalled her mentioning a few months back that she was interested in being part of the next movie, hoping to finally appear in a financially successful film. Others noted that she’s known for her role as Mary Jane Watson in the Spider-Man trilogy directed by Sam Raimi.

But someone else pointed out that she didn’t have children yet, and suggested she was hoping to both star in a commercially successful film and make a good impression on her future kids.

One person pointed out Kirsten Dunst’s willingness to take on diverse roles, from the show Fargo to a Minecraft movie, saying she doesn’t worry about what people expect, which is what makes her so great. Another user simply celebrated her success, saying “Get that bag!”

Many people are also praising Kirsten Dunst’s impressive and varied career, highlighting films like Civil War, The Virgin Suicides, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as examples of her talent.

One person jokingly said they suddenly wanted to see Minecraft 2, while another commented that she’s incredibly talented and capable of anything.

I’m so excited – they just announced a second Minecraft movie is coming out on July 23, 2027! While we wait, I’m planning to check out some of the biggest movies ever made and other great video game adaptations. I’m also looking ahead at everything else coming to theaters in 2026 to keep me busy until then!
