Fans have long been curious about the Spider-Man movie featuring the Sinister Six villains that Sony Pictures hinted at several years ago. The film, which would have united Spider-Man’s most famous enemies, was cancelled without much explanation – until now.
Drew Goddard, who was set to write and direct the film, has explained why the Sinister Six movie was ultimately never made.
Drew Goddard reveals why Sony’s Sinister Six movie got canceled
While promoting his new movie, Project Hail Mary, director Goddard recently discussed some of his past projects that were ultimately cancelled. He revealed that the failure of the Sinister Six film was directly connected to a major hacking incident in Hollywood.
Director Webb Goddard explained that his planned Spider-Man movie featuring the Sinister Six was cancelled after the Sony hack. He was on the studio lot when the FBI arrived and witnessed the investigation firsthand. While disappointed, he accepted that the situation was out of his control and acknowledged it could have been worse if they hadn’t liked the script in the first place.
In 2014, Sony Pictures was the target of a major cyberattack believed to have been carried out by hackers from North Korea. This attack resulted in the release of a huge number of private emails, causing significant problems for the studio and leading to the cancellation of several movies in development. One of those cancelled projects was a Spider-Man film focusing on the Sinister Six villains.
Originally, a movie featuring the Sinister Six villains was planned for release in 2016 as a sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man films starring Andrew Garfield. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 included hints about the team forming, with scenes after the credits showing equipment and plans. The movie likely would have included villains like Kraven the Hunter, Doctor Octopus, and Vulture, and even showed designs for the team in the credits.
Although a similar idea appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the original concept proposed by Goddard is still considered a major missed opportunity in superhero movies.
