Project Hail Mary is a fantastic science fiction story filled with both humor and heartfelt moments. What makes it truly special is how it cleverly bends the rules of traditional storytelling.

At first glance, Project Hail Mary seems like a classic, big-budget movie plot: a brave and attractive hero journeys into space on a mission to save humanity.

Andy Weir’s book and the screenplay Drew Goddard wrote did something unusual for a Hollywood movie – they handled the main character in a surprisingly effective way, and the more I consider it, the more remarkable it seems.

Project Hail Mary and the “hero’s journey”

Many popular Hollywood movies, like Star Wars, Harry Potter, and most superhero films, use a common storytelling pattern called the “hero’s journey.” This structure was made famous by Joseph Campbell.

This classic story pattern follows a character who starts out as an everyday person, then embarks on an adventure. Along the way, they receive guidance from a mentor, overcome various challenges, face a significant turning point, and ultimately return home changed by the experience.

In the movie Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling plays Dr. Ryland Grace, who goes on an incredible adventure. The story isn’t told chronologically, jumping between different points in time as it unfolds.

Grace, a science teacher, doesn’t seem like the typical hero, and at first, he declines the offer to join the Petrova Task Force. This is a common story trope where the hero initially hesitates before accepting their mission. Eventually, he agrees to help save the world.

How that shocking twist changes everything

Grace starts as a consultant, offering his expertise to the team working on ‘Project Hail Mary.’ After a science officer dies, he’s asked to join the mission himself.

Grace refuses, which makes sense given the hopeless situation, and he honestly says he doesn’t have the courage to make that kind of sacrifice. However, since this is a movie, we can assume he’ll ultimately change his mind and become a hero.

However, Project Hail Mary then surprises viewers with a major twist: Grace consistently declines to participate, firmly telling mission commander Eva Stratt that no amount of persuasion will change her mind.

Stratt points out that the situation involves more than just his own well-being, but instead of facing the problem, Grace immediately turns and runs from it.

Stratt is both cold-blooded and practical, so she has her forces track him down. They then put Grace into a medically induced coma against his wishes, before sending him off on the spacecraft that will ultimately be his final resting place.

Turning a storytelling rule on its head

Blockbuster movies usually need a hero audiences can admire. But this character avoids being heroic, constantly making excuses – like a lack of training, a fear of elevators, or an inability to dance – to dodge the responsibility of saving the world.

What makes Project Hail Mary’s storytelling so clever is that we’ve already seen Grace demonstrate his courage earlier in the book, especially in how determined he is to help his alien companion, Rocky. Because of this, we can easily overlook his earlier moments of weakness and even find humor in his past cowardice, knowing how far he’ll eventually come.

The writing is daring and pushes boundaries, which is particularly noteworthy in a big-budget Hollywood film meant for all ages. This story element is a key reason why ‘Project Hail Mary’ is such a memorable and impressive experience.
