Dr. Park Being Friends With Turk Is the ‘Scrubs’ Revival’s Biggest Reveal in Episode 6

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the recent Scrubs revival, specifically Episode 5, “My Angel.” While the revival has introduced some new characters, they’ve mostly played supporting roles. However, after this episode, one new character has quickly become surprisingly important to the events that have happened over the last 17 years. As Scrubs continues its return, it seems likely this character will become even more central to the story.

Joel Kim Booster first appeared as Dr. Kevin Park in the two-episode premiere of the Scrubs revival. The show quickly set up Dr. Park as a rival to JD (Zach Braff), as he was poised to become the new chief of medicine at Sacred Heart – a position JD unexpectedly took. After appearing in just the first two episodes, including “My 2nd First Day,” Dr. Park returns in “My Angel” with a surprising and significant reveal.

“My Angels” Reveals Turk & Dr. Park Were Close Friends In JD’s Absence

It’s natural that Turk would take JD’s side, given the constant clashes between JD and Dr. Park – they’ve been best friends since college. Even after the show’s eighth season, when work kept them apart, they remained close. Despite any current distance, Turk doesn’t actually dislike Dr. Park, especially since JD’s return. Their interaction in the episode “My Angel” shows that Turk and Dr. Park actually became friends sometime after Season 8.

TURK: “Why are you always giving [JD] a hard time? He got the job; you didn’t. Get over it.”

DR. PARK: “No.”

Hey, what’s going on with you? We used to be friends, Kevin. We even bowled together on a league team, before he showed up.

DR. PARK: “And when JD falls, we shall bowl again.”

TURK: “My boy ain’t gonna fall!”

DR. PARK: “Say hi to Carla for me.”

Scrubs revival, Episode 5, “My Angel.”

It started as a funny throwaway line, but now it’s officially part of the Scrubs story. Considering the complicated relationship between JD and Dr. Park, it’s amusing to imagine JD finding out they were once friends. He’d definitely feel betrayed, even though this happened before he unexpectedly returned to Sacred Heart. What’s really sweet, though, is that Turk immediately prioritized his friendship with JD over his one with Dr. Park when it became clear he couldn’t have both. However, it seems Turk also fondly remembers when he and Dr. Park were close.

‘Scrubs’ Has Already Proven That Dr. Park Wasn’t the Friend That Turk Needed

ABC

Seeing Turk bowl with Dr. Park made me think he was really missing JD after he left Sacred Heart. But when JD came back, Turk confessed he’s been totally exhausted juggling being Chief of Surgery and raising four daughters. They used to be able to unwind together at the hospital – they always had each other’s backs, the same goofy sense of humor, and that little ritual of grabbing a roof beer after work. He really missed having that outlet and that connection with JD.

Turk enjoyed being friends with Dr. Park, but it wasn’t enough to relieve his stress. So, it wasn’t shocking when Turk supported JD after Dr. Park became upset about not being chosen as Chief of Medicine. Turk and JD have a deep connection and truly understand each other, while Dr. Park was always more of a casual friend. It seems like Turk and JD might return to bowling together if JD doesn’t succeed in his new position and steps away.

JD Being Promoted Over Dr. Park Is a Cool Full-Circle Moment

As we discussed, Dr. Cox was a strong contender to take over, but ultimately JD was chosen as his successor. From a narrative standpoint, this made the most sense, and Zach Braff’s character was simply a more natural fit for leading a teaching hospital. This decision also sets up a new dynamic where JD faces challenges – a role previously filled by Dr. Cox. Ultimately, this positions JD to eventually take over from Dr. Park as the leading candidate to become Chief of Medicine.

Considering all of that, it’s noteworthy that Dr. Park joined Sacred Heart after J.D. left, stepping into the role of Turk’s friend that J.D. had previously filled. Of course, Turk and J.D. remained friends even after Season 8, but it became harder to show that closeness with J.D. gone. Ultimately, J.D.’s departure led to Dr. Park’s arrival, and then, when J.D. returned for the Scrubs revival, he not only resumed being Turk’s close friend at work, but also took over as the likely next Chief of Medicine.
