DoorDash is now having delivery drivers perform household tasks like washing dishes, cooking, and making beds. This unusual program is designed to help train artificial intelligence robots.
Bloomberg reports that the company has released a new app, ‘Tasks,’ which allows delivery drivers to record themselves finishing their daily deliveries.
These paid tasks involve everyday activities like having a casual conversation in Spanish, making a bed, washing or loading dishes, basic plant care, or cooking on a stovetop.
DoorDash is using photos and videos submitted by its workers to improve its AI technology. A company spokesperson said these materials will also be used to develop tools for businesses in various industries, including retail, insurance, hospitality, and technology.
DoorDash rolls out Tasks for dashers to make more money
So, the app I use for deliveries is getting some new features, and honestly, it’s kinda interesting. They’re adding these “digital tasks” for us drivers – things like taking pictures of food for restaurant menus, snapping pics of hotel lobbies to show where to leave deliveries, and even scanning shelves in stores to help with inventory. It’s a little different than just dropping stuff off, but it could be a good way to earn a bit extra.
As a long-time DoorDash user, I always thought it was obvious – how can a driver deliver to you if they can’t find your door? Or grab the right milk if they don’t know what’s in stock? Apparently, that’s been DoorDash’s focus for over ten years! Their General Manager, Ethan Beatty, explained they realized the technology they built to solve these everyday delivery headaches could actually help other businesses too. It’s cool to see how a simple idea – getting things delivered accurately – has grown into something bigger!
Tasks is designed to help businesses get a better understanding of local conditions and gain valuable insights. It also provides Dashers with another flexible way to earn money, beyond just making deliveries. With over 8 million Dashers covering almost every area of the U.S., this expands earning opportunities for them.
DoorDash explains that payment for work done through the Tasks app is provided immediately and depends on how difficult the job is.
Tasks is available in limited cities within the U.S., but not yet in California, New York City, Seattle, or Colorado.
