LinusTechTips, a well-known YouTube creator, is criticizing the platform for adding even more lengthy, unskippable advertisements.
For years, YouTube ads have frustrated viewers. The platform, owned by Google, keeps finding new ways to insert them, even bypassing tools designed to block them, like through ads on pause screens.
YouTube recently started showing 30-second, non-skippable ads to people who watch on their TV apps, because more and more people are using YouTube on their televisions.
The announcement angered many YouTube users who don’t pay for Premium, and even prominent creator LinusTechTips publicly criticized YouTube’s new ad approach.

LinusTechTips warns his YouTube channel might no longer be “viable”
In a recent episode of his WAN Show podcast, Linus discussed how YouTube is projected to earn over $60 billion in ad revenue in 2025 – more than Disney, Warner Bros., and Paramount combined.
A frustrated viewer recently questioned YouTube’s increasing number of ads. They pointed out the addition of 30-second, unskippable ads on TVs and wondered if this was just the beginning. They expressed concern that YouTube might end up mirroring traditional cable TV, with long, disruptive ad breaks, and asked if there was a limit to how many ads would be shown.
The creator also expressed concern about the low-quality AI-generated content appearing on the platform, but mentioned they plan to discuss the issue with company leaders and work towards addressing it.
It’s time to figure out what kind of platform you want to be. You could follow TikTok’s path, or become like Facebook and Instagram – filled with endless, low-quality, AI-generated short videos designed for quick satisfaction. Or, you can accept some short-term challenges to maintain your unique character and stay true to what makes you, YouTube.
Linus believes that, based on current trends and his YouTube analytics, Linus Tech Tips might not be sustainable in its present format in the foreseeable future.
You have the power to help change YouTube for the better. You can contribute to making it a platform that feels good to use, one where you don’t feel bad about spending time. Sharing thoughtful, well-made content is a way to do that, leaving viewers feeling positive and fulfilled.
The video platform has had a complicated approach to AI. While they’ve removed some popular AI-focused channels, they continue to develop and offer AI tools for creators, including features that allow them to create AI-generated short videos using their own image and voice.
In March, YouTube began surveying users about certain content “feeling like AI slop.”
YouTube creator PewDiePie recently gained a lot of attention online after explaining how he changed his viewing habits on the platform to improve his experience. He did this by stopping watching Shorts and focusing on content tailored to his interests, effectively working around the usual algorithm.
