Despite featuring popular actors Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson, a recent sci-fi action thriller hasn’t performed well. After a disappointing run in theaters, the film – which has sparked a lot of debate – will now be available to stream. It cost $60 million to make but didn’t earn that much back at the box office.
The new thriller arrives in theaters on January 23rd. Chris Pratt and Laura Ferguson star as adversaries in a high-stakes courtroom drama. Pratt plays Detective Chris Raven, who must prove his innocence after being accused of his wife’s murder. He has only 90 minutes to convince Judge Maddox, played by Ferguson – an AI judge who provides all the evidence needed to build his defense.
The sci-fi thriller Mercy, directed by Timur Bekmambetov and featuring Annabelle Wallis, Kali Reis, Chris Sullivan, and Kylie Rogers, will be available on Prime Video this Sunday, March 22nd. While critics haven’t been kind to the film – it currently has a 25% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – audiences seem to enjoy it much more, giving it a strong 83% score on the Popcornmeter. Despite the negative reviews, it might be worth a watch!
What Went Wrong With ‘Mercy’?
I really think Mercy deserved more attention, especially with how relevant it is right now. Everyone’s talking about AI and what it could mean for the future, and this movie hits on those anxieties about things going wrong – it really gets at what we’re all worried about!
Despite an interesting premise, the movie Mercy didn’t attract a large audience, and a big reason was Chris Pratt’s casting. Audiences are used to him playing quirky and charming characters in films like those from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Jurassic Park. It was difficult to see him in the more subdued role he played in Mercy, and that likely contributed to the film’s disappointing box office results—it earned only $54 million, falling $6 million short of its production budget.
The film’s heavy reliance on surveillance footage – for most of its 100 minutes – didn’t improve things. Though an interesting idea, it actually made the story feel distant and lacked the immersive quality you’d expect from a movie. Similar to the disappointing War of the Worlds, Mercy felt more suited for streaming than a grand theatrical release.
Despite mixed reactions, Mercy has a solid audience score of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, with many calling it intriguing and suspenseful. Whether you’ll enjoy it is subjective, but it’s worth considering if you’re looking for something new to watch on Prime Video.
What’s Next for Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson?

Amazon MGM Studios
Despite recent controversies, Chris Pratt will reprise his role as the voice of Mario in the highly anticipated sequel to last year’s hit, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That film earned over $1 billion worldwide, and audiences will be eager to see how the new installment performs when it’s released on April 1st.
Fans can catch up with Helen Ferguson in the new movie Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which continues the story of the popular British TV show. It will be available on Netflix starting this Friday, March 20th.
