Okay, so I’m really excited about the new Star Wars movie with Ryan Gosling, Starfighter. Apparently, they’re going back to using practical puppets – real, physical creatures and characters – instead of just relying on CGI. As a big Star Wars fan, that’s huge! It’s something the original films were known for, and it’s awesome to see them bringing that tradition back. It just feels more… real, you know?
Ryan Gosling reveals if Star Wars: Starfighter will have practical puppets
Ryan Gosling has let slip that the upcoming Star Wars film, Starfighter, will feature physical puppets. When asked about how the movie is being made, he simply confirmed their use, saying, “Yeah, I think I can say that.”
You know, when I asked Gosling about working with the puppets on set, he got a little cagey! He playfully warned me I was getting him into trouble and hinted he’d already revealed as much as he could. It definitely seems like there’s still a lot about this production they’re keeping secret, which honestly just makes me even more excited to see it!
Practical puppets have been central to creating the unique feel of Star Wars. Right from the beginning, the filmmakers relied on physical creations to portray important characters. A prime example is Yoda, who was designed by Stuart Freeborn and brought to life by puppeteer Frank Oz in The Empire Strikes Back.
Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi really pushed the boundaries of practical effects, using a huge, mechanical puppet. And more recently, Grogu from The Mandalorian demonstrated that skillful puppetry is still a popular technique in today’s filmmaking.
The new Star Wars movie, Starfighter, is scheduled to come out in theaters on May 28, 2027. It will take place after the story of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and is meant to be a self-contained film within the larger Star Wars saga.
While the plot is still a secret, Ryan Gosling will likely play a mentor character, with Flynn Gray also starring. Mia Goth, Matt Smith, and Amy Adams are also part of the cast. Lucasfilm hasn’t released any further details about the film yet.
