I just finished watching season one of Criminal Record on Apple TV+, and it was fantastic! It’s a really gripping police procedural – eight episodes long, and I’m so glad I discovered it. It didn’t get a ton of hype, but it quickly became one of my favorite thrillers on the platform, and with season two coming up, now’s the perfect time to check it out.

Starring Oscar winner Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo, known from The Good Wife, Criminal Record is a compelling new police drama. The series has quickly gained attention for its strong performances and realistic characters, proving to be a standout in a crowded field. The first season was a hit with both critics and viewers, and the upcoming second season promises to be even better.

Apple TV’s Criminal Record Is A Crime Thriller Worth Binging

With only eight episodes, each between 43 and 55 minutes long, Criminal Record season 1 is a fast-paced thriller that’s easy to binge-watch. While its brevity is a plus, the show’s captivating story is what truly draws viewers in. The series follows a murder investigation that’s reopened when an anonymous tip reignites interest in a cold case.

Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty, played by Peter Capaldi, led the investigation into a murder, but his team mistakenly convicted the wrong person. When Carla (Joana Borja), who previously reported information anonymously, contacts the police and claims the man currently serving a 24-year sentence at Whitecross Prison is innocent, Detective Sergeant June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) takes notice.

Despite being allies, it’s obvious Hegarty was involved in a significant cover-up. This creates a tense dynamic where Hegarty attempts to hide the truth, while Lenker is committed to preventing an innocent man from being wrongly imprisoned for life.

Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo are the biggest reasons to watch Criminal Record. Their scenes together are gripping, and it’s never clear who will come out on top – both actors deliver strong performances. The show is consistently engaging, with a well-managed pace and a satisfying conclusion in the final episode.

While Criminal Record shares some similarities with mystery shows, it’s not a standard ‘whodunit.’ Instead of simply focusing on solving an old crime, the series explores deeper issues like bias, police misconduct, and moral choices.

Criminal Record Season 2 Is Set To Improve Upon The First

As a big fan of thrillers, I thought the first season of Criminal Record ended in a really clever way. The finale revealed who the killer was, which gave a sense of closure, but it definitely didn’t tie up everything. It left enough unanswered questions that I’m really hoping season two will address. Luckily, the first season built a fantastic base for the story, so I’m excited to see where they take it next.

Detective Lenker uncovered Detective Hegarty’s involvement in Errol Mathis’s conviction, but Hegarty wasn’t punished during the investigation. The upcoming season of Criminal Record will likely explore this further, continuing to focus on the strained relationship between the two detectives.

Okay, so now that we really know Lenker and Hegarty, and we get why they do what they do, I’m guessing Season 2 of Criminal Record is going to get seriously intense. The big question, though, is whether these two will ever actually resolve their issues, or if their conflict is just going to keep spiraling. Honestly, I’m on the edge of my seat to find out!
