Ever since Sadie Sink was cast, fans have been speculating about her role in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie. Now that the trailer is out, those rumors are gaining even more traction. With the popular Netflix series Stranger Things recently concluding, Sink appears poised to take on a significant role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
When the actress signed on to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, her character’s importance was highlighted, but details were kept under wraps. Since then, fans have guessed she could play several different Marvel characters, including Black Cat, Gwen Stacy, and even Jean Grey. While Jean Grey might seem like an unusual choice for this Spider-Man story, it’s still a possibility.
The Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer Teases Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey Rumors
Sony had a specific plan for how they released the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Small parts of the trailer started appearing online, shared by Marvel fans in various countries on Tuesday, March 17th. Then, on Wednesday, March 18th, the official trailer was fully released. Unfortunately, the trailer didn’t show Sadie Sink’s character directly, leaving her role a mystery.
The Spider-Man trailer surprisingly hinted that actress Anya Taylor-Joy will be playing Jean Grey from the X-Men. During a scene, Spider-Man manages to stop a tank that’s going out of control. When he looks inside to see who’s driving, he finds an elderly woman who seems lost and confused, and she gently shakes her head.
It was really unsettling when the camera shifted to a Damage Control officer behind Spider-Man – he looked completely out of it, like he was under the same kind of control as that woman earlier. Then, bam, that controlling force just moved to someone else! Tramell Tillman’s character summed it up perfectly, saying, “We’re dealing with a threat we can’t control, one we can’t even see.” It really drove home how helpless they were against whatever this thing is.
It’s likely Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe because Jean is known for her powerful telepathic abilities – she can read and control minds. This would explain the mind-related threat hinted at in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer. Plus, reports suggest Sadie Sink was Marvel’s top choice for the role of Jean Grey even before filming began.

The trailer suggests a mind-control element that aligns with Jean Grey’s powers, making the rumors about Sadie Sink playing her seem more likely. However, it would be surprising if Marvel introduced Jean Grey as a villain in a Spider-Man movie. If she does appear as a villain, it’s possible she’s not in control of her own actions.
You know, I was really hoping to see Tombstone in that trailer! Word is he’s going to be one of the villains, and honestly, a mob boss like him feels like the perfect big bad for this more grounded, street-level story they seem to be telling.
As a huge film fan, I’ve been thinking about how they could realistically portray Jean Grey’s struggles. If someone, maybe even a shadowy organization like the DODC (who went after Ms. Marvel and Wonder Man), had leverage over her family or people she cares about – or was actively pursuing her – it would totally explain a desperate, cornered reaction. It reminds me a bit of the vibe from the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer, where you just feel the character lashing out because they’re pushed to the limit.
