Worried about the environment? You might want to check out the new Netflix documentary, The Plastic Detox. It’s causing a stir on TikTok, with many users expressing concern over the surprising risks of microplastics.
So, I just started watching this new documentary, and it’s pretty wild. It opens with this scientist, Shanna Swan – she’s an expert on how our environment affects our bodies – and she actually wrote a book called ‘Count Down.’ Basically, it’s all about how chemicals all around us are messing with our sex lives and ability to have kids. It’s a bit of a wake-up call, honestly.
Dr. Swan points out that birth rates are falling quickly around the world, and this decline appears to be strongly connected to chemicals found in everyday plastics. He then details the alarming extent to which we are all exposed to these plastics, highlighting how difficult it is to avoid them.
In The Plastic Detox, viewers meet six couples who are having trouble getting pregnant. Dr. Shanna Swan guides them in minimizing their plastic exposure to explore if it could improve their chances of conceiving.
The Plastic Detox viewers say “we’re all f**ked”
The new Netflix documentary came out this week (March 16th), and people on TikTok are already discussing it. Many are worried about plastic waste and are planning to cut back on their use, inspired by tips in the documentary.
Okay, so I just watched this documentary called ‘The Plastic Detox,’ and honestly, I’m seriously upset after seeing it. It’s terrifying – they’re saying microplastics are showing up everywhere, even in breast milk and, like, inside babies before they’re even born! It really freaked me out. The woman who posted about it, MakAndTy2022, was so disturbed she started throwing out all her plastic stuff – bowls, spoons, everything. It’s making me rethink all my plastic purchases, that’s for sure.
She started showing me all the stuff in her house she’s trying to get rid of – everything from sofa covers and rugs to even things like trash bags and electronics! She was already really concerned about chemicals in the home, but after watching that ‘Plastic Detox’ documentary, she’s completely committed to getting rid of plastic – she’s totally crashed out, as she put it!
The video sparked a lot of discussion, and one commenter highlighted the issue of plastic waste. They shared that they plan to keep using their storage containers and other organizational items for life, even passing them down to future generations, instead of constantly replacing them with new plastic products.
MakAndTy2022 commented that items are essentially already here, so we should preserve them instead of throwing them away. They also stated they’ll be avoiding new plastic purchases and will focus on creating things or finding new homes for recyclable materials instead.
TikTok user Hilly_Dilly shared in a video that watching the Netflix documentary The Plastic Detox was a bit overwhelming. They explained it’s a thought-provoking film, but warned that if you tend to overthink things, it might not be the best choice – it really makes you think!
I was really shocked and upset by how many chemicals are in everything we use daily. It was especially difficult for me to watch, given my struggles with fertility. Overall, it was a good film, but be warned – it might be disturbing for some.
Elsewhere, Chrisistheone said, “What I’ve learned from The Plastic Detox is we’re all f**ked.”
TikTokers recommend “clean swaps” after Netflix documentary
Many TikTok users are offering advice on reducing plastic use. For example, Stephanie Mero shared several videos before the launch of a recent campaign on the topic.
I was watching this documentary, and honestly, the results were wild! They had six couples change up their usual products to cut down on plastic, and three of them actually got pregnant! It was a really surprising outcome, and it definitely got me thinking about what we’re all putting on our bodies and in our homes.
Mero praised the documentary for thoroughly covering the important aspects of microplastics, but noted she would have liked to see more discussion about recycled plastics.
She explained that studies have shown recycled plastic bottles release significantly more harmful chemicals into the products they become. Her view is that we need to stop using plastics altogether, not just switch to recycled versions – we simply need to use less plastic.
I was really struck by what Mero said about needing to push for safer plastics. She had some great ideas for what we can do now, too! She suggested we all try to avoid packaging whenever we can, and switch to glass containers when possible. And when it comes to clothes, she thinks natural fabrics are the way to go – which makes a lot of sense to me.
These findings have sparked a lot of questions, including one from a customer who said, “I recently switched to InnerScence because it seemed like the cleanest shampoo and conditioner available. Can you suggest other clean options?”
Someone else shared that they use the Yuke app to scan products in stores before purchasing them. It provides a rating, and they only buy items rated as ‘excellent’ or ‘good’. They specifically recommend Native as their preferred brand for shampoo and conditioner.
Someone asked Mero how she gets her drinking water. She replied that she uses water filters at home and always drinks from glass bottles – either ones she brings with her or buys – specifically avoiding bottles with painted caps. She then directed the person to a link in her bio for more information.
Mero also suggests making simple, healthier product choices right away. She says switching to the cleaner products linked in her bio helped her balance her menstrual cycle and eventually get pregnant.
