Invincible fans defend Season 4 after “goofy” Dinosaurus backlash

The character Dinosaurus appears in the first episode of Invincible Season 4, but some viewers initially thought his on-screen design looked less impressive than in the comics. Now, fans are speaking up to support the show’s version of the character.

The fourth season begins with the episode ‘Making The World A Better Place’, where Mark continues his efforts to improve the world, despite being ostracized after what happened in Season 3. While trying to clean up a mess, he unexpectedly encounters Dinosaurus.

David Anders plays a villain with a unique twist – he’s essentially two personalities in one, similar to how the Hulk transforms. When he becomes Dinosaurus, he believes the best way to save the planet is to drastically reduce the human population.

Okay, so Dinosaurus looks a little different in the show than he does in the comics, and some people were immediately pointing that out, saying he lacked detail. Honestly, this isn’t new for Invincible – people are always analyzing the animation style. But like before, fans are jumping to the show’s defense, and it’s cool to see everyone supporting the artists’ choices.

Dinosaurus sparks debate after Invincible Season 4 introduction

After two versions of the character Dinosaurus were shown together before the start of Invincible Season 4, many viewers said he appeared too simple in design.

One Reddit user commented that the character’s design seemed a bit too simple and could have been improved without costing too much. Another user admitted the character looked somewhat silly, but said they would still watch the show because they enjoy it.

Someone else agreed, saying they were happy to see others acknowledging the declining quality of the animation.

As an anime enthusiast who loves shows like Jujutsu Kaisen and Fate/stay night, I found Invincible disappointing. It features well-known voice actors, so I expected a higher quality of animation and visuals to match the investment.

On X, one user commented that their goat, Ryuuki Hashimoto, could have easily handled that animation, while another expressed disappointment with the animation in the series, noting it doesn’t capture the level of detail present in the original comics.

Someone else commented that while they weren’t suggesting a perfect copy or even the inclusion of scales, the current design just didn’t look right. They specifically felt the spinal scales, at the very least, needed to be more visually interesting or designed with more flair.

Honestly, whenever someone criticizes the show, there’s always a ton of fans ready to jump in and defend it – especially when it comes to the animation and how hard it is to adapt a comic book to live-action. I even saw someone on Reddit point out that people just complain way too much, and I kind of agree!

Someone pointed out that if the character looked like that on screen, the show’s funding would likely be cut. Another person disagreed, saying that while 2D animation is usually costly and challenging, Amazon is one of the few companies that could realistically afford it, so they doubted the claim that budget was the issue.

Someone else suggested the issue isn’t a lack of creativity, but simply a lack of time. They explained that executives often don’t allow artists enough time to properly develop their work, whether it’s for television, video games, or any other project.

The show released Seasons 2 through 4 relatively quickly – all within a little over a year – which is a fast turnaround for animation.

One fan commented that animating the show with the level of detail seen in the comics would significantly increase production time. Another suggested the show’s animation challenges stem from its current release schedule – aiming for almost hour-long episodes every year.

There’s a limit to what can be accomplished given the current workload and timeline. Simply hiring more animators won’t completely solve the problem. To give you an idea, even a single episode of Family Guy takes around 10 months to make.

Honestly, it’s tough when you’re working with source material that looks amazing. I mean, the art in Dinosaurus was seriously better than a lot of even the best Superman comics – like, 95% of them, easily!

On X (formerly Twitter), a fan posted a GIF of a screaming man to express how ‘Invincible’ comic book panels often have more detail than individual frames in the animated series, despite the show running at 24 frames per second for 40 minutes.

Someone shared a comparison of Batman’s appearance in the comics versus the animated series, pointing out that most cartoon adaptations of comic book characters tend to have a simpler visual style.

I’ve noticed that with almost any cartoon based on a comic book, it always ends up looking a bit simpler than the original. It’s just the nature of adapting it to animation, I guess!

Someone posted a very detailed image of Dinosaurus from the Invincible comic and challenged another artist to redraw it 1,440 times.

Someone else added, “Were you hoping for more realism? Because, honestly, this is just typical for cartoons and comics.”
