Marques Brownlee, the popular YouTuber known as MKBHD, isn’t concerned that YouTube’s new AI features will replace him, but he is worried about what they might mean for other creators on the platform.
YouTube is trying to reduce low-quality, AI-generated videos, often called “AI slop.” Ironically, the platform heavily relies on artificial intelligence itself – AI handles most of its content moderation, which frustrates many creators, and it also uses AI to create summaries for longer videos.
I’m really excited about some new stuff YouTube is testing! Now, if you’re watching on your TV, you can actually ask YouTube questions about the video using AI. Like, if a song comes on, you can just ask what it is, or if you’re watching a cooking video, you can find out exactly what ingredients they’re using. It’s pretty cool!
Many creators are concerned about the impact of artificial intelligence, but Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) isn’t overly worried about his own channel. However, he is concerned about how AI might affect other creators.
MKBHD isn’t too worried about YouTube’s AI tools
During a conversation with Jon Youshaei, Marques Brownlee was asked whether AI tools that summarize his videos might eventually make his work unnecessary.
Marques Brownlee pointed out that people generally prefer watching content created by other people. While AI-generated videos are improving and gaining popularity, he believes viewers specifically tune into his videos for his personal insights and opinions.
So, I’m sharing what I think, and how I want to share it. Honestly, I’m hoping that’s why people keep coming back to watch – they want to hear my take on things.

He also expressed concern that YouTube’s summary feature could be problematic for channels that create longer, informational videos, like 15-minute tutorials covering basic topics.
This change will probably affect how people quickly get information. I believe our videos offer both information and entertainment. If you only want the facts, you could read the summary of my iPhone reviews and then leave, but if that’s all you need, it makes you wonder why you’re even watching on YouTube in the first place.
People watch these videos for the entertainment and the relatable human element, and I believe they’ll continue to do so if they enjoy those aspects.
The YouTuber also shared with Youshaei that he’d reinstate the dislike button if he ran YouTube for a day, and he clarified the reason for discontinuing the Panels app.
