Starbreeze Studios recently announced a new subscription service for their game Payday 2, and shortly after, they increased the price of a downloadable content bundle by 44%, from $118 to $170. After receiving negative feedback, the team apologized for the mistake and has now restored the bundle to its original price of $118.
Gustav Nisser, head of commercial at Starbreeze, explained to PC Gamer that the 44% increase in price for the Infamous Collection wasn’t connected to the launch of their new Payday 2 Subscription service, which costs $5 a month and unlocks a lot of the game’s downloadable content. Despite some fans believing the price increase was a way to push people towards the Subscription, Nisser stated it was simply a coincidence.
Nisser explained that they wouldn’t have made the change if they’d known it would happen right before the subscription launch. They also admit they failed to communicate the price change to their community, which was a mistake. Essentially, there were issues with both internal planning and how they communicated with users, and the negative reaction from the community shows that. Many felt like the change was a push to get people to subscribe, but Nisser assures this wasn’t intentional – it was simply an oversight.
Okay, so Starbreeze really messed up with the price of The Infamous Collection, and the fans let them know! They’ve officially apologized and totally fixed it. They put the price back to the original $118, but then added an extra 31% discount, so right now you can grab the whole bundle on Steam for just $84.92. It’s a good thing they listened to us!
Nisser acknowledged the community’s concerns about the timing of the recent launch alongside the new subscription service, admitting they were right to be upset. He stated they made a mistake in how they handled things and will be apologizing to the community, hoping for understanding that it was unintentional.
Okay, so just to be clear, the Infamous Collection and the subscription stuff are all for Payday 2, not the new Payday 3. I checked the numbers, and it looks like Payday 3 isn’t pulling in nearly as many players as Payday 2. Payday 2 regularly has tens of thousands of us playing, while Payday 3 struggles to even hit 1,000 at a time. It’s pretty obvious which game is way more popular right now!
The Infamous Collection, currently for PC players only, includes over 70 downloadable content items like character skins, weapons, and new characters. While the full collection costs $118 (or is usually priced at $84.92), you can purchase these items individually at a discounted price on Steam.
