Okay, so the rumors were true! Playground Games and Turn 10 are officially making Forza Horizon 6, and it’s set in Japan! The announcement trailer was short and sweet – mostly just a glimpse of Mount Fuji – but apparently Xbox really went all-out to make sure they got Japan right. They even brought in a cultural consultant to help the developers throughout the whole process, which is awesome to hear!
In a recent post on Xbox Wire, cultural consultant Kyoko Yamashita shared why the team behind Forza Horizon 6 wanted to thoroughly understand Japan before building it into the game.
Yamashita explained that while many people admire Japan, it’s easy to misunderstand the country if you only see a superficial image. The development team aimed to create a realistic and detailed world, not just a pretty picture. Bringing in a cultural consultant from the beginning allowed them to make countless small, thoughtful choices – from the sounds of city streets to the meaning of colors on signs – that build authenticity and avoid harmful stereotypes, ultimately making the game more engaging and believable for players.
Yamashita explained that creating an authentic experience wasn’t about simply ticking boxes, but an ongoing effort reflected in everything from the game’s seasons to its day-night cycles. While Forza Horizon 6’s Japan won’t be a perfect replica of the whole country, the goal is to make it feel recognizable and immersive for both people who know Japan and those who are visiting it virtually, especially when it comes to showcasing Japanese car culture.
Yamashita observed that Japanese car culture is remarkably rich and varied. From small ‘kei’ cars and vans with dedicated fans, to high-level racing, the origins of drifting, and a strong desire to personalize vehicles, it’s a uniquely appealing scene. He wanted to capture this inclusive atmosphere – where both newcomers and experienced enthusiasts feel welcome – in the game he’s creating, building a similarly complex and engaging world for players.
Forza Horizon 6 is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2026, and it will be available to play immediately with an Xbox Game Pass subscription. A version for PlayStation 5 is also being made, but it will be released after the initial launch. For the latest updates on the game’s progress, check out the guide from TopMob.
