Peaky Blinders creator reveals toughest part of ending saga in The Immortal Man

Stephen Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, has discussed the main difficulty he encountered while finishing the story in the spin-off film, ‘The Immortal Man’.

The popular crime drama Peaky Blinders premiered in 2013 and followed the Shelby family’s criminal activities in Birmingham after World War I. Over six exciting seasons, the show received praise from both critics and viewers.

Although the TV series finished in 2022, the Peaky Blinders saga continued in the film ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man,’ where Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) faced a conflict with his son, Duke (Barry Keoghan).

The movie takes place during World War II and wraps up the current story of the Shelby family. The popular TV series will continue with a new generation in the 1950s, but figuring out a satisfying conclusion for Tommy’s storyline wasn’t easy.

Why Peaky Blinders creator avoids giving fans “what they want”

Stephen Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, playfully agreed that the excitement around the story is “completely justified.” He then explained that he put a lot of thought and effort into how the story would end.

Knight explained that once you start worrying about what others expect or want, you’re on the wrong track. He believes that trying to cater to those expectations ultimately leads you astray.

Writing requires self-control, as Knight explains. He focuses on simply telling the story as he sees it, letting it unfold naturally without overthinking, and striving for an authentic conclusion based on where the narrative leads.

“Because it’s 30 odd hours of television. You’ve got to pay it off with something really special.”

It looks like Knight’s strategy paid off! “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man” has a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes before it even premieres on Netflix on March 20, 2026.

If you’re as hooked on the Peaky Blinders as I am, you might be wondering where Arthur Shelby is in the movie, and there’s a story about the show calling out someone for using footage in a political ad.
