Season 3 of Alice in Borderland is now available on Netflix, and for those wondering about Shuntaro Chishiya (played by Nijirō Murakami), here’s an update.
Inspired by Haro Aso’s manga, *Alice in Borderland* is a gripping and intense series that has a lot in common with *Squid Game* – both shows feature people compelled to compete in life-or-death games.
While sharing some common ground with other survival dramas, *Alice in Borderland* really sets itself apart as a science fiction series that explores what makes life meaningful. The challenges the characters face are central to the plot, but the show also focuses heavily on their personal journeys and development.
With Season 2 concluding at the same point as the original manga, the highly anticipated third season ventures into new territory, bringing Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) and Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya) back to the dangerous world of the Borderlands.
Is Chishiya in Alice in Borderland Season 3?
I was really bummed to find out Chishiya won’t be back for Season 3 of Alice in Borderland, and it looks like Hikari Kuina won’t be either! Apparently, Nijirō Murakami and Aya Asahina, the actors who play them, just had scheduling conflicts that didn’t allow them to return. It’s a shame, but hopefully it won’t impact the season too much.
Several Japanese news sources report that actor Murakami paused his work on the newest season of the Netflix show to prioritize his well-being. He’s reportedly feeling much better and has resumed acting, but won’t be appearing in Season 3 as a result.
So, things got a little complicated with Asahina. She announced she was pregnant back in December 2023, and now the filming schedule for the next part of the game clashes with her maternity leave. It’s a bit of a tricky situation, honestly.
Fortunately, the main characters all find a happy ending. After Arisu defeats the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Borderland Season 2, both Chishiya and Kuina decide to return to the real world.
After waking up in the hospital beside his opponent, Chishiya decides to turn over a new leaf. Meanwhile, Kuina is happily reunited with her family, and her father, who previously struggled with her identity, finally accepts her for who she is.
Okay, so we haven’t *seen* them yet, but that hasn’t stopped everyone who loved Alice in Borderland from hoping and talking about what might happen next. Seriously, the theories are wild!
A Reddit user pointed out that Chishiya tweeted “can’t say yes or no,” suggesting he might either appear briefly in a flashback – similar to how Thanos was used in Squid Game Season 3 – or have a significant, currently unrevealed role in the upcoming season.
Someone else added, “He’s incredibly popular! He’s been my favorite character ever since he was introduced, and honestly, he could easily be the main character.”
Many fans miss Kuina. One Reddit user expressed hope that she’ll return in Season 3, while another suggested a flashback appearance or a brief cameo would be great.
