Sinners’ Jayme Lawson Says BAFTAs Were Exploitative, Not Inclusive

Jayme Lawson, star of Sinners, commended Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo for their graceful response to a racial slur directed at them during the BAFTAs last weekend. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the NAACP Image Awards, Lawson praised their handling of the situation. However, she also strongly criticized both the BAFTAs and the BBC for their response.

During a television appearance last weekend, John Davidson, an advocate for people with Tourette’s syndrome, involuntarily used a racial slur directed at Jordan and Lindo. Davidson has coprolalia, a condition where tics manifest as offensive outbursts. While viewers were informed about his condition, Lawson argues that more could have been done to ensure the safety and well-being of both Davidson and his fellow cast members. She believes simply including someone with a disability isn’t enough; true inclusivity requires providing the support needed to prevent harm. Lawson stated that Davidson’s disability was exploited during the incident, leading to harmful outcomes.

A clip of Davidson using a racial slur was shown on the BBC, but he argues the broadcast only included that moment, omitting other things he said. Lawson criticized the BBC for airing the clip, stating it wasn’t a mistake but a deliberate lack of consideration for the two Black men involved. She also noted the BBC seemingly removed the phrase “Free Palestine” from director Akinola Davies Jr.’s speech. Lawson accused the BBC of censoring a Black man and failing to protect Davies, as well as the production designer of Sinners, who was also subjected to the slur. She stated the BBC doesn’t value their dignity or humanity, wanting to showcase their art without offering protection. The BBC explained they cut Davies’ speech due to time constraints, but Lawson questioned this explanation, pointing out that “Free Palestine” was also bleeped from a speech at the BRIT Awards.
