A lesser-known action thriller from director Ridley Scott is currently available on Prime Video, and it’s worth checking out for fans interested in his earlier films. Though he’s famous for movies like Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator, this 1989 neo-noir is a genuinely underrated gem.
It’s a bit surprising this movie isn’t more remembered. Released on September 22, 1989, it was a financial hit, earning $134 million on a $30 million budget. However, it didn’t launch a series of sequels or significantly change the thriller genre like Blade Runner did for science fiction, which probably explains why it’s faded from many people’s memories.
‘Black Rain’ Was Similar to Another Ridley Scott Classic
As a huge fan of crime thrillers, I always loved Black Rain. It stars Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia as two New York City detectives, Nick Conklin and Charlie Vincent, and it’s a really compelling story. They’re tasked with bringing a member of the Japanese yakuza back to Japan, but things go south when he manages to escape. Suddenly, they’re completely immersed in the dangerous world of Japanese organized crime, trying to track him down and navigate a culture they don’t fully understand.
Like Blade Runner, Black Rain has a similar look and feel. Both films feature rain-soaked streets reflecting neon lights, and instead of a polished city, Black Rain presents a grimy, dystopian Osaka with smoke filling the air.
Douglas’ character is quite similar to Rick Deckard, played by Harrison Ford. Both characters feel like outsiders, disconnected from their familiar surroundings, and both grapple with their own moral principles. They also both learn humility after initially being overconfident. In many ways, they’re strikingly alike – almost like brothers.
Michael Douglas Called ‘Black Rain’ A Physically Demanding Role
After winning an Oscar for his role in Wall Street, Michael Douglas was eager to try something different. He chose to play Nick Conklin in Black Rain because he hadn’t portrayed a physically demanding police officer in a long time. He explained to Bobbie Wygant in 1989, while promoting the film, that he was looking for a role that would challenge him in a new way.
Douglas faced the challenge of being the central figure in the film and performing a surprisingly physical role. He explained that audiences often don’t realize how demanding it is for an actor to be in almost every scene. He added that the difficult locations, constant travel, and extensive action sequences – including some intense fight scenes – made the experience particularly challenging, but ultimately rewarding to complete safely.
Honestly, I was blown away by this film! Knowing Scott directed it, I really expected something special, and it definitely delivered. If you haven’t seen Black Rain yet, you absolutely need to check it out on Prime Video – seriously, don’t wait!
