Although Starsand Island doesn’t emphasize farming as much as Stardew Valley, the two games share many similar activities, even though Starsand is still being developed. Being a newer game, Starsand Island can learn from the successes and failures of games like Stardew Valley to improve its own gameplay.
Starsand Island is designed to be a very relaxing experience. The developers clearly want players to enjoy a stress-free game and aren’t rushing you to finish – they want you to play at your own pace.
10. Moonlit Forest
The Equivalent of Stardew’s Mines

Starsand Island’s Moonlit Forest is a key area for Explorer quests and gathering unique materials. As you progress and unlock camps within the forest, you’ll gain teleport points to help you quickly travel between different sections. This system works similarly to the elevator in the mines from Stardew Valley, making it easier to navigate the deeper parts of the zone.
Exploring mines can be unpredictable – you never know what dangers or darkness you’ll encounter. Moonlit Forest offers a more peaceful experience because it’s consistent and predictable. Enemy and resource locations stay the same, making it easier to find exactly what you need. You can head straight to a specific spot knowing you’ll find the resource you’re looking for.
9. Stamina Management
Stamina Lasts Longer in Starsand Island
As a huge fan of life sims, I quickly figured out that Starsand Island uses stamina just like a lot of other games – it’s basically what fuels everything you do! It’s really similar to the energy system in Stardew Valley. Every action, like mining, costs stamina. And if you run out? You collapse! Staying up all night will also knock you out, and there’s a penalty – you wake up the next day with only half your stamina, so you really need to manage it!
Okay, so playing Starsand Island, I’ve noticed my stamina seems to last way longer than in Stardew Valley. I think it’s because I’m not constantly doing things that drain it, like watering crops. And honestly, watering doesn’t even take much stamina in Starsand! Plus, the islanders are super generous with food, so I’m always able to quickly refill my stamina bar whenever I need to. It just feels a lot more forgiving in that way.
8. Islander Requests
They Want Just a Few Items
On Starsand Island, residents can ask for things they need using the Request Bulletin. It works similarly to the help wanted board at Pierre’s shop in Stardew Valley, but people on the island often request items that are harder to find, like fruits and vegetables that aren’t currently growing.
When completing requests on Starsand Island, you’ll find several available each day. This increases the likelihood of receiving requests for items you already possess or can easily obtain. As a result, it’s a more laid-back experience – you can earn coins and build relationships with characters without the stress of tight deadlines or impossible-to-find items.
7. Mail
Islanders Send so Much Mail
The characters in Stardew Valley occasionally give you gifts. However, the people on Starsand Island consistently send mail, and that mail usually contains items connected to their jobs. For instance, Delphin, the fisherman, often sends around a dozen fish, while Pastelle, who raises animals, typically sends animal products.
You’ll receive lots of gifts in the mail from other players, and it can quickly fill up your inventory. Although it might seem overwhelming, these gifts are actually really useful when you first start playing, as they often include items you’ll need.
6. Fewer Events
Keeping Track of Days is Less Important
Keep in mind that Starsand Island is still being developed, so things might change. Currently, the game only has two major events scheduled, which is much less than you’ll find in Stardew Valley. However, Stardew Valley has been around for ten years and has had time to build up its event calendar.
Having a small number of events helps you learn the other parts of the game without needing to constantly check the calendar. While more events would be welcome later on, this current setup is ideal for when the game first launches, giving players time to get comfortable before major updates arrive.
5. Cars
You Can Travel Easily
While Stardew Valley lets you travel faster with horses, Starsand Island introduces vehicles and roads to explore. This system suits Starsand’s 3D environment, making the island feel bigger. Having these travel options helps you get around efficiently and avoid staying out too late.
Okay, so there’s a ton of ways to get around in this game! You can use everything from cars and trucks to even rollerblades and motorcycles! The bigger vehicles can be pricey or a pain to build, but thankfully you can rent them for a few days without breaking the bank. Sometimes you can even use rental tickets instead of money, which is awesome!
4. Robots
You Can Automate Everything
Starsand Island lets you build small robots to handle everyday chores, freeing you up from repetitive tasks. You can create robots to care for your animals and plants, and even gather wood automatically – it’s a huge help!
Okay, so building robots isn’t exactly a walk in the park. You’ll have to get pretty far into Zerine’s crafting quests before you can even think about it. But honestly, you should be doing those quests anyway! They’re super important because they unlock the ability to do quests with the other mentors. That’s why Solara tells you to focus on crafting first – it opens up so much of the game!
3. Home Design
You Have More Creative Freedom at Home
In Stardew Valley, you can expand your house and customize the interior, but your options are somewhat limited. Starsand Island, however, offers a decorating experience similar to Animal Crossing. You can buy extra land to create more space and then freely arrange furniture as you please.
In Starsand Island, you can also completely redesign your rooms and how your house is laid out. Many players find this really calming – there’s no rush, just the freedom to create a home that truly reflects your personal style.
2. Fishing System
Starsand Island’s Fishing Isn’t as Stressful
In Stardew Valley, fishing involves keeping a fish icon centered within a moving bar. It can be quite stressful! The bar jumps when you click, so you need to carefully balance it over the fish. To make it even more challenging, the fish itself moves around unpredictably, often causing you to miss your catch.
Fishing on Starsand Island is pretty simple. When a fish bites, you hold a button to reel it in. If the line turns red, let go for a moment to prevent it from breaking, then start reeling again once it returns to normal. It’s an easy system and won’t cause you any stress!
1. Crafting System
The Crafting Set-up Makes it Easy
Starsand Island is more helpful when you’re learning to craft. The quests given by Zerine guide you step-by-step, and it’s simple to see which crafting materials you already have and what you still need to collect. While crafting in Stardew Valley isn’t difficult, it doesn’t provide as much clear information as Starsand Island does.
Starsand simplifies blueprint discovery. The Islandpedia often shows where you obtained a blueprint when you view the item. While many blueprints are unlocked by progressing with a mentor character, you can find a large number of furniture blueprints hidden around the island, primarily in treasure chests. This system is well-organized and easy to follow.
While Starsand Island and Stardew Valley are different games, Starsand might be a good choice if you found Stardew Valley a bit too demanding. If you’re looking for a relaxing new life simulation game, Starsand Island offers a gentler experience.
