DC’s ‘Wonder Twins’: Isabel May Comments on Canceled HBO Movie

Isabel May, who stars in the upcoming Scream 7 as Tatum Evans (Sidney Prescott’s daughter), recently discussed a DC film project that was ultimately canceled. While she’s known for her role as Elsa Dutton in the Yellowstone prequel 1883, May was previously cast to play Jayna in an HBO Max movie about the Wonder Twins. Riverdale’s KJ Apa was set to co-star as Zan.

On May 18, 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav canceled the film Wonder Twins about a month before production was scheduled to begin. Actress May recently discussed her involvement with the canceled DC project in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. She stated, “Most projects don’t work out, and you need to be able to accept that. You have to be resilient, move on, and focus on what’s next.” May also explained that while she wasn’t very familiar with DC Comics, she was drawn to the film’s overall idea and decided to take the role.

I didn’t know much about the DC universe before getting involved. People said it was a major opportunity, so I took it. I found the project genuinely funny, and I really enjoyed working with the creative team.

May later detailed the process of moving on after the film was canceled, saying:

As a film fan, it’s always a bit surreal when you actually get involved in a project. You’re flown out, you start trying on costumes, and things feel real. Then, suddenly, you get a call – like just a week after everything’s announced – saying the studio’s changed direction. In this case, it was David Zaslav taking over and deciding not to move forward with the film. Honestly, I understand how the industry works, and I’m not really bothered by it. It’s just… jarring. You were picturing this film as part of your future, and then, poof, it’s gone. You just have to take a step back and figure out what’s next.

History of The Wonder Twins and the Final Days of the DCEU

Warner Bros.

The Wonder Twins were created by Norman Maurer, Bill Hanna, and Joe Barbera for The All-New Superfriends Hour. These twin aliens gain superpowers when they combine their power rings. Jaya can transform into any animal, while Zan can become water in any form – liquid, solid, or gas. Officially added to DC Comics’ official storyline in 1995, the Wonder Twins have become a beloved part of the DC universe. They were first brought to life in live-action by David Gallagher and Allison Scagliotti in the Season 9 Smallville episode, ‘Idol’.

I was really excited when I first heard about the live-action Wonder Twins movie! It seemed like it came and went so quickly. Announced in February 2022, they even cast Isabel May and KJ Apa by April, but then it was canceled just a month later. It was supposed to be one of several DC movies heading straight to HBO Max, alongside things like Blue Beetle, Batgirl, and a Zatanna film directed by Emerald Fennell, who did Wuthering Heights. Sadly, Wonder Twins and Zatanna never even got to start filming. Batgirl was even more heartbreaking – they finished the whole movie, and now it feels like it’s just…gone. At least Blue Beetle got a proper theatrical release, which is a small win for DC fans like me.

Adam Sztykiel was going to make his directorial debut with a film about the Wonder Twins. Having previously written Black Adam, many believed the Wonder Twins movie would connect to Dwayne Johnson’s plans for expanding the DC Universe, potentially leading to a Justice Society spin-off and a Black Adam sequel featuring Henry Cavill as Superman. However, 2022 proved to be a difficult year for DC, and unfortunately, the Wonder Twins project got caught in the resulting changes. There’s still hope that the characters of May and Apa could appear in James Gunn’s new DC Universe in the future.
