Marvel’s cinematic universe is taking a scary turn with the animated series *Marvel Zombies*, and we’ve highlighted the most disturbing scenes from the show’s first four episodes.
Marvel Zombies is pretty much what you’d expect: Marvel’s famous heroes and villains are transformed into zombies. This creates some interesting twists, as heroes can become the bad guys, and villains might even become allies.
Originally a comic book launched in 2005, the story is now an animated series available to stream on Disney+.
The animated series features several actors reprising their roles from the live-action movies, including Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, and Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop. Be warned – the following contains major spoilers!
1. Captain America splits
Alexei Shostakov, Russia’s version of Captain America, always wanted to fight Steve Rogers, imagining a legendary battle that his country would celebrate in song.
In Marvel Zombies, Red Guardian anticipates a certain outcome, but things don’t go as planned. During a zombie attack at the end of the first episode, Zombie Cap reaches the SHIELD Base, though he’s been bisected – his legs are missing.
He navigates through the ventilation system, seriously injured, and then attacks Alexei. He quickly moves around behind Alexei’s shield and punches him in the groin.
Cap dangles from the ceiling before leaping onto Alexei’s back. Alexei then kicks off the wall, landing on top of Cap and sending the zombie version of Steve Rogers crashing to the floor. “I did it,” Alexei exclaims, “and the song will be amazing!”
2. Zemo does a Lando
In the second episode, Baron Zemo brings Red Guardian, Ms. Marvel, Yelena, Jimmy Woo, Shang-Chi, and Katy to his secret base – a remodeled underwater prison called The Raft.
This part of the story feels similar to the scene in *The Empire Strikes Back* where Lando Calrissian lures Han and Leia to Cloud City, only to betray them to Darth Vader. Shortly after the team arrives at Zemo’s destination, he abandons them, leaving them at the mercy of Namor and a horde of underwater zombies.
Honestly, Zemo’s words just chilled me to the bone. He basically said, ‘Don’t waste tears on those soldiers.’ They swore to defend our city, and he thinks he’s *giving* them a chance to do that… by letting them sacrifice themselves to whatever that monster is. It’s twisted, but he seems to think it’s what heroes are *supposed* to do – become bait. It’s a really messed up way of looking at things.
Despite Namor’s attack, Kamala manages to defeat him by striking him with her powerful, magically-enhanced fist, ultimately causing a fatal explosion. Later in the series, Zemo also meets his end, fatally wounded by a similar attack.
3. Thanos vs Rocket
The third episode brings back Thanos, but as a zombie. He still has the Infinity Gauntlet, but it’s incomplete – Spider-Man currently holds the Mind Stone that’s needed to power it.
While Spider-Man fights desperately against the Mad Titan, reinforcements arrive: Groot, Rocket Raccoon, and Thor, who is eager for revenge.
The three heroes charge at Thanos, but their attack fails. Thanos activates the Infinity Gauntlet and unleashes a powerful blast that knocks Thor out of the fight. It’s far more devastating for Groot and Rocket, completely incinerating them and leaving only Rocket’s skull behind.
4. Nova Corps attack
The Marvel Zombies story largely follows Kamala Khan and her team as they attempt to deliver a transmitter to the Nova Corps, hoping it will stop the zombie outbreak.
In the third episode, the group finally reaches space and finds the galactic police. However, they discover that the police have put Earth under quarantine.
A message arrives with devastating news: the planet is doomed. Anyone who tries to escape will be immediately destroyed. The message demands everyone return to the surface or face annihilation.
If they don’t cooperate quickly enough, the Nova Corps will attack, turning what should be a rescue into a dangerous fight for survival.
5. A sting in the tale
In the show, Wanda Maximoff transforms into the ‘Queen of the Dead’ and amasses an army of zombie-like warriors with the goal of reclaiming the planet. However, she requires assistance from Kamala, and in Episode 3, she warns Ms. Marvel that she can’t escape what’s meant to happen.
That comes to be in Episode 4, when Wanda’s zombies are killing or turning the makeshift Avengers.
“We’re supposed to be here,” Maximoff says. “To finish this together. I’m more powerful than you, Kamala, but even I can’t save us on my own. I need your help. Don’t resist. Let’s work together – we can fix this. You can help me bring everyone back… make everything right… you still have the power to save the world.”
Watching her friends struggle, Kamala finally joins them, and the world is magically fixed, returning her to her bedroom. However, things quickly become strange, hinting at a hidden reality like in the movies *They Live* and *The Matrix*.
Kamala is happily enjoying boba tea with Kate Bishop and Riri Williams when she’s suddenly overwhelmed by visions of the zombie apocalypse. She quickly returns to the present, but the terrifying images return, accompanied by a voice telling her it’s all an illusion.
Once back with her friends, Kamala is asked if she’s okay, but she doesn’t answer. It suddenly hits her that everything she thought was real was a carefully constructed illusion meant to help the zombies survive. We see one final, terrifying roar from a zombie before the screen goes black, bringing the series to a deeply disheartening end and strongly hinting at a need for a second season of Marvel Zombies.
