Borderlands 4 launched earlier this month on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. While it was originally planned for release on the Switch 2 on October 3rd, Gearbox Software has now delayed the version for that console. They say they need a bit more time to finish development, announcing the delay just 10 days before the planned launch.
Gearbox announced on social media that they’ve delayed the game, explaining it wasn’t an easy decision. They want to make sure the game is the best it can be for fans and needs more time for development and polishing. They also want to release the game alongside cross-save functionality, which they know is important to players. Gearbox will share a new release date as soon as they finalize their plans.
Hi Vault Hunters, we have some news about Borderlands 4 on the new Nintendo Switch. We’re delaying the release because we want to make sure the game is the best it can be, and it needs a little more development time. We didn’t make this decision easily, but we’re committed to delivering a great experience for our fans.

The publisher confirmed that all pre-orders for Borderlands 4 on the upcoming Switch 2 will be canceled, following Nintendo’s policy. Players can request a refund immediately, or they’ll receive one automatically on September 26th.
I was really excited for Borderlands 4 – the reviews coming out before launch were great! But it’s been rough for a lot of PC players on Steam, who are saying the game just isn’t running well and feels poorly optimized. It’s been a bit frustrating to see the CEO, Randy Pitchford, actually push back against that feedback and defend the game’s performance, even days later. He *has* offered some advice on how to get it running better on both PC and consoles, but it feels like he’s not really acknowledging the core problems people are having.
Gearbox has already fixed some stability problems on the PC version of the game. They’ve also announced they’re working on a patch for the PlayStation 5 Pro.
