Baby Steps, a new game from the creators of notoriously difficult titles like QWOP and Getting Over It, has just been released. Publisher Devolver Digital is marking the launch with a live stream featuring peaceful nature scenes – interrupted every 15 minutes by the game’s character dramatically falling into view.
Just as strange, funny, and awkward as you’d expect, Baby Steps puts you in the shoes of Nate, a down-on-his-luck character, who climbs a massive mountain one step at a time. The game uses a unique control system that looks both interesting and challenging. The stream showcases the beautiful and peaceful environments Nate has to navigate during his climb.
The stream is consistently amusing because, every few minutes, Nate hilariously falls – tumbling over rocks or landing face-first in the dirt, much like the players in Baby Steps. It’s funny because you often forget it’s coming; the peaceful nature sounds are unexpectedly broken by Nate clumsily crashing through the scenery, especially when the stream is running in the background.
If you watch the stream carefully, you’ll see more than just Nate popping up unexpectedly. Free copies of the game Baby Steps are sometimes offered through product keys that briefly appear on screen, as a little bonus for those who enjoy the strangely relaxing experience of waiting to see the oversized baby character appear.
Baby Steps is a truly unique game, as shown by its unusual ESRB rating description which mentions “human/donkey hybrids with exposed male genitalia.” The game was originally planned to launch sooner, but Devolver Digital smartly decided to push the release date to September 23rd to avoid coinciding with the launch of Hollow Knight: Silksong. They announced the delay with a funny video of Nate struggling to climb a statue of Hornet, the main character from Silksong.
Baby Steps is out now for PC and PlayStation 5, and it’s also confirmed to work well on the Steam Deck – perfect if you need a way to vent your frustrations!
