It seems like trends from the past always make a comeback, and that includes the famous red swimsuits from the 1990s show, *Baywatch*. The series is being revived for television, but this isn’t a continuation of the 2017 movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Alexandra Daddario. After a long development process, Fox has officially ordered the show to be made, although there’s been a significant change in who’s working on it.
The new *Baywatch* series has been in development for years, starting with production company Fremantle. It gained significant momentum in early 2024 when Fox agreed to review a script. Initially, the project was led by television writer Lara Olsen, whose previous work includes *Private Practice*, *Reba*, and *90210*. However, due to recent changes in production, she is no longer involved as showrunner and executive producer.
Baywatch’s TV Reboot Now Has A New Showrunner
So, after Olsen’s departure, Matt Nix is taking the reins. Now, I’m familiar with his work – he’s the guy behind the fun, quirky crime show *Burn Notice*, which I really enjoyed back in the day. But let’s be honest, he’s had a bit of a mixed track record. He’s created a lot of shows – *Complications*, *APB*, *The Good Guys*, even the *Turner and Hooch* reboot and *True Lies* for CBS – but most haven’t really stuck around. The only one that managed to get beyond a single season was *The Gifted*, which had a nice tie-in with the Marvel universe. It’ll be interesting to see if he can recapture that *Burn Notice* magic here.

Pamela Anderson recently revealed some surprising details about her time on Baywatch, including a strange story about the show’s iconic red swimsuits. She also discussed how, despite initially wanting to avoid revisiting the series, she ended up participating in a documentary about it, admitting she felt pressured by those around her.
Nix will lead the new series as showrunner and executive producer, working alongside the original creators: Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, and Doug Schwartz. Dante Di Lorteo will also be involved in the production.
It appears John Bonann may be taking on a more significant role working behind the scenes. Fox President Michael Thorn announced the news with the following statement:
Baywatch was a huge hit that captured the spirit of beach culture and made lifeguards famous. Now, we’re bringing it back with Fremantle! Fox and Fremantle are teaming up with original creator Greg Bonann and Matt Nix to introduce Baywatch to a new audience. Expect updated stories, exciting new actors, and all the action and drama that made the original series a worldwide phenomenon.
While details about the plot or who will star in the show haven’t been revealed yet, now that it’s officially confirmed, those announcements should be coming soon.
Baywatch’s Episode Count And Premiere Window
Currently, plans are in place for a first season of *Baywatch* with twelve episodes. However, it’s likely the network could extend that to a full season of around twenty or twenty-one episodes if it performs well.
Fox is planning to revive *Baywatch* and hopes to premiere the new series in Fall 2026, potentially beyond the usual 2025 TV season. However, if the initial order is for only 12 episodes, it might instead debut mid-season.
Fox had a show called *Rescue: HI-Surf* in development around the same time Lara Olsen was working on *Baywatch*. When *Rescue: HI-Surf* was canceled after just one season, it cleared the way for *Baywatch* and its characters to become a major primetime hit.
The show *Baywatch* gained renewed attention in early 2025 when it finally became available on streaming services after resolving a number of legal and rights issues. This followed the 2024 documentary series, *After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun*, which looked back at the original series’ huge success.
Stay tuned for more details about Baywatch‘s return to television, and stay safe in the water.
