Now that the initial “pod” stage is over, season ten of Love Is Blind moves onto the next part of the show: romantic trips. This season, the six engaged couples went to Cabo San Lucas for the second phase of the experiment. However, there was a surprise: Vic and Christine were sent to Malibu, California, instead. While the show shows scenic shots of palm trees, Vic and Christine happily share updates from Calamigos Ranch in Malibu, emphasizing how well they’re getting along and enjoying their time together, before the couples inevitably return to their hotel rooms and things get more complicated.
This season of Love Is Blind is breaking new ground. For the first time, the show is featuring footage of a seventh couple’s post-pod romantic getaway – something it’s never done before. According to creator Chris Coelen, this was due to logistical constraints. The production team typically has the resources to follow a maximum of six couples during their tropical retreat. However, they were so impressed with the connections this season that they expanded coverage. “This season, we felt so good about the couples that for the VERY FIRST TIME we chose to follow SEVEN of them, producing the biggest season in Love Is Blind history!” Coelen told Vulture.
To move things forward, we offered Christine and Vic a private trip to Malibu. They weren’t as closely connected to the other couples still in the experiment, and we were really happy when they agreed to go.
Episodes five and six clearly show why this approach hasn’t been used before. While the rest of the cast experiences the usual ups and downs of meeting face-to-face, Vic and Christine are kept completely separate. This makes for a less compelling story – we don’t see the jealousy or the deeper discussions that naturally happen when people interact with each other and get to know their partner’s connections. It also doesn’t feel like the show’s producers are actively filming them. Instead, the footage seems self-recorded, with the telltale signs of selfies and natural background noise. Importantly, Vic and Christine aren’t being asked the probing questions a producer would typically use to explore their feelings, conflicts, or chemistry. We also miss those candid, unscripted moments of overheard conversations or distant shots. It’s clear Vic and Christine are only showing us what they choose to film.
The show Love Is Blind seems to want to be upfront about Vic and Christine’s relationship – they got engaged, so the show wants to show it. While that’s a good idea in theory, the execution falls short. Showing just a little bit of their story actually creates more questions than if they hadn’t been shown at all. Instead of a complete mystery, they’ve become a frustrating tease. (It’s a bit like the idea of ‘known unknowns’ – we know there’s something we don’t know.) Maybe the show decided to include them because they do end up getting married, and the producers didn’t want to lose that positive outcome. If that’s the case, congratulations to Vic and Christine! You managed to have a Love Is Blind experience without all the extensive filming.
