It’s been amazing to see the Monster Hunter Stories series develop over the last ten years. Starting with its simple origins on the Nintendo 3DS and then significantly improving with Wings of Ruin on Switch, the series has consistently gotten better in terms of gameplay and graphics. I’ve played the newest installment, Twisted Reflection, and fans will be thrilled – Monster Hunter Stories 3 is the best game in the series so far.
Twisted Reflection boasts the most captivating story in the series so far. The game opens with an amazing sight: two colossal monsters frozen in an endless, crystallized battle. Players then discover and save a crystallized egg, leading to the birth of twin Rathalos – creatures long believed extinct – hinting at a looming disaster. The game immediately draws you in with its beautiful world, dangerous Blightstone-covered monsters, and compelling narrative.
Longtime fans of the series will find the gameplay familiar, as Capcom has focused on refining what already works well. Instead of just fighting monsters, you build relationships with them, and these creatures – called Monsties – look better than ever. They’re also helpful outside of battles; for example, I used my Rathalos to fly around and quickly get to different areas. The game also feels more polished and visually stunning than previous entries, with beautiful creature designs and environments.
Battles still use the classic strengths-and-weaknesses system – think rock-paper-scissors. You’ll choose between powerful attacks, speed-based moves, or technical attacks, each effective against a different type. While the system is fairly straightforward (though things like staggering enemies and double attacks add some strategy), the story is the main reason to play. The game looks fantastic, making boss fights feel epic and keeping you invested in even the turn-based combat. I’m hoping the gameplay will become more complex as you progress.
Monster Hunter Stories 3 Preview: Final Verdict
I’m really enjoying the beginning of this game, and you can try it out for yourself! There’s a free trial available that lets you reach level 10, and any progress you make will transfer to the full game if you decide to buy it. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection comes out on March 13, 2026, and I’m excited to continue playing – it’s the best in the series so far and has exceeded my expectations.
ComingSoon received a copy of the game from the publisher for our Monster Hunter Stories 3 preview.
