Following his work with Academy Award winner Gary Oldman on the show Slow Horses, Jack Lowden will be teaming up with another well-known actor for his next Apple TV series.
Apple TV announced in April 2025 that they are developing a series based on Philip Kerr’s acclaimed Berlin Noir novels. In July, it was revealed that Jack Lowden, known for his role in the Emmy-nominated Slow Horses, will play the lead role of detective Bernie Gunther, focusing on his beginnings.
Colin Firth, the Academy Award-winning actor, will star alongside Lowden in Apple TV+’s upcoming series based on the Berlin Noir novels. Firth will play Paul Lohser, a highly intelligent but difficult detective with the Berlin Police. Lohser is known for being detail-oriented, reserved, and well-educated. Despite his contrasting personality, he becomes Bernie’s partner and closest friend, and ultimately, Bernie’s only chance to solve the case.
Colin Firth, the Academy Award-winning star of The King’s Speech, has joined the cast of a new Apple TV drama. The series is based on the Berlin Noir books, but will tell the story of how Bernie Gunther became a detective in 1928. At this time, Bernie is a newly promoted police officer working for the Berlin Murder Squad, and he’s assigned to investigate a possible serial killer who is preying on vulnerable people.
Jack Lowden first worked with Apple TV when he played River Cartwright in the popular series Slow Horses. The show, based on Mick Herron’s novels, has become one of Apple TV’s biggest successes, winning two Emmys and receiving many other award nominations. It’s been renewed for a seventh season, and there are currently no plans for the show to conclude.
Filming is underway in Berlin for the adaptation of Berlin Noir. Tom Shankland, a BAFTA nominee, is an executive producer, alongside Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman through their production company, PlayTone. Peter Straughan, who previously won a Best Adapted Screenplay award for Conclave, wrote the screenplay. This project reunites Straughan with Colin Firth, as they co-wrote the 2011 film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy together.
Colin Firth is known for iconic roles like Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice and Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary, as well as his Academy Award-winning performance in The King’s Speech and his work in the Kingsman action films. He’s a well-known actor who will be a major addition to one of Apple TV+’s most eagerly awaited new series.
