The TrenchWork team has been developing a game called TrenchFoot for several years. It’s a first-person shooter created using the GZDoom engine, set in a unique world that blends futuristic technology, dieselpunk aesthetics, and elements inspired by the stories of H.P. Lovecraft.
Creating this project is a huge undertaking, which explains why it’s taking time. To keep fans entertained while they wait, the developers are releasing smaller, separate adventures within the same world. The first, CountryCide, came out in 2022, and now a second story, Butcher’s Summit, has been released.
This modification is a completely separate experience, almost like a small, free game. Story-wise, it’s a prequel to TrenchFoot, detailing the actions of a zealous Templar unit fighting for a galactic empire. They’re sent to attack heretics in the Vosnian Mountains, tasked with destroying an enemy anti-aircraft battery. While they initially succeed, the enemy quickly fights back, scattering our forces. Ultimately, the fate of the mission rests on the shoulders of the player character.

Butcher’s Summit is a complete overhaul of Doom II, built using GZDoom to improve the original game’s technology. It features three large levels that will likely take around two hours to finish. Everything – weapons, items, and enemies – has been replaced, and the gameplay has been significantly updated. The result is a visually impressive experience that feels like a modern take on classic ‘boomer shooter’ games.
