Overwatch just killed off its first hero…kind of

Overwatch is now focusing more on telling stories, and they’ve started this new direction by unexpectedly removing a beloved character from the game.

Blizzard has revealed exciting plans for Overwatch at its recent Spotlight event, suggesting 2026 will be a major year for the popular hero shooter.

The game is now simply called “2”, and it’s moving to a yearly release schedule. Each year will focus on one main story, and a total of ten new characters will be introduced – five at the start of Season 1, and five more throughout the rest of the year. These characters will be added to the existing cast of heroes.

For the first time ever, Blizzard has decided to permanently remove a beloved character from their games, signaling a willingness to make tough decisions with its long-standing heroes.

Doomfist just died in Overwatch, but mains don’t need to worry

A cinematic trailer shown at the Spotlight event depicted a battle between Vendetta and Doomfist for leadership of Talon, the primary villainous organization in the Overwatch story. The fight concludes with Doomfist being thrown out a window and falling to what appears to be his death.

The new animated short, ‘Reign of Talon,’ shows the beginning of a new era for the organization.

The story continues in Season 1: Conquest, featuring 5 new heroes, Vendetta’s debut in Stadium, fresh Sub-Role Passives, and much more!

Okay, so it’s been confirmed – Doomfist is actually dead in the Overwatch storyline! I know a lot of us main him, and I was a little worried, but apparently, it won’t change anything in the game itself. Alec Dawson, one of the game directors, said the story stuff won’t affect who we can play as, which is a huge relief! We can still wreck things with Doomfist, even if he’s gone in the lore.

So, I was reading an interview with the developers, and they basically said they’re not planning on removing any characters from the game, no matter what happens to them in the story! That’s awesome to hear. But, they also mentioned they do want the maps and heroes to change and feel connected to what’s currently going on in the game’s storyline. It sounds like they’ll be updating things to match the narrative, which I think is a really cool idea!

Plus, the way Doomfist’s story ended left things uncertain, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he returned in a future update without feeling out of place.

This marks a new approach for Overwatch, introducing the possibility of character deaths within matches, though characters will remain playable overall.
