So, I was reading an article the other day, and it turns out Obsidian had a rough year with releases. Apparently, only Grounded 2 really hit the sales numbers they were hoping for. It’s kinda crazy because both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed were in development for over six years, and neither of them sold as well as Microsoft expected. That’s a long time to spend on a game that doesn’t perform, you know?
In the final part of his article, Jason Schreier explains that Obsidian Entertainment intends to balance working on large-scale projects with smaller ones. This includes entirely new games, as well as updates and expansions for both The Outer Worlds 2 and Grounded 2. While they aren’t planning a third Outer Worlds game, they do intend to continue developing games set in the Avowed universe.
I was surprised to hear Obsidian basically say they’re done with The Outer Worlds after the second game. I didn’t necessarily expect a third game right away, but the way they said it feels… final, and it’s a little worrying as a fan. It’s also confusing to me why they’re focusing on more Avowed games, especially since those haven’t exactly flown off the shelves. I thought the first Outer Worlds was a big win for the studio, so it’s hard to understand this shift in focus.
Fantasy Versus Sci-Fi
One commenter, Suspicious-Sound-249, questioned the decision to make a sequel to Avowed, pointing out that the first game didn’t sell well and its follow-up struggled to reach 1 million copies sold within three months of release. They believe a second Avowed game is likely to fail unless Obsidian Entertainment announces something truly remarkable, expressing little optimism for its success.
The article refers to “games in the Avowed universe,” which means the popular Pillars of Eternity series, and even a potential tactics game Josh Sawyer has been advocating for, could still be included.
Josh Sawyer has said he’d only consider making Pillars of Eternity 3 if it had a very large budget, similar to Baldur’s Gate 3. Given the cost, it’s doubtful Microsoft and Obsidian will approve the project.
Literally_A_Brick finished playing Avowed and found the ending to be a real drag. They said it wasn’t enjoyable and has left them with a negative impression of the series.

I think both Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 have the same problems. Their open worlds feel empty when you’re not following a specific goal, and the quests mostly involve either killing enemies or collecting items – they don’t offer much variety or depth.
It’s still unknown what Obsidian Entertainment is working on next, but the studio aims to avoid releasing multiple games in one year like they did in 2025. We’ll have to wait for an official announcement to find out more.
