As a huge Overwatch fan, I’m honestly shocked by the direction they’re taking things! It seems like they’re really focusing on telling a deeper story now, and they started with a major twist – they actually killed off one of the most beloved characters. It’s a bold move, and I’m really curious to see where this new story arc goes.
Blizzard recently announced exciting plans for Overwatch at their Spotlight event, suggesting 2026 will be a major year for the popular team-based hero shooter.
The game is now simply known as “2”, and it’s moving to a yearly release schedule. Each year will focus on one main story, and a total of ten new characters will be introduced – five at the start of Season 1, and five more throughout the rest of the year. These characters will be added to the game’s existing roster of heroes.
For the first time ever, Blizzard has decided to permanently remove a beloved character from their games, signaling a willingness to make tough decisions with long-standing favorites.
Doomfist just died in Overwatch, but mains don’t need to worry
A cinematic trailer shown at the beginning of the Spotlight event depicted Vendetta battling Doomfist for leadership of Talon, the primary villainous organization in Overwatch. The fight concluded with Doomfist being thrown out a window and falling to what appeared to be his death.
I’m so hyped for the new animated short, ‘Reign of Talon’! It looks like Vendetta and Doomfist are going head-to-head for control of Talon, which is going to be epic. And Season 1: Conquest sounds amazing – five new heroes, Vendetta coming to Stadium, and some cool new Sub-Role Passives? Seriously, I can’t wait!

Okay, so it’s been confirmed – Doomfist is officially dead in the Overwatch storyline. I know a lot of us main him, and honestly, I was a little worried! But good news: Blizzard has said this won’t change anything about being able to play as Doomfist in the game. According to Alec Dawson, a game director, the story stuff won’t impact who’s playable, which is a huge relief!
The developer confirmed that characters won’t be removed from the game, even if their stories change. However, they do plan to update maps and heroes to match the ongoing story and events within the game, according to a GameSpot interview.
You know, Doomfist’s ‘death’ wasn’t really conclusive, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he shows up again someday. It wouldn’t even feel that weird, honestly! They left it open enough that bringing him back would make sense.
This marks a shift for Overwatch, introducing the possibility of character deaths within matches, though they’ll still be playable in the overall game.
