Marathon is poised to innovate the extraction shooter genre with a newly discovered ranked mode that sets it apart from games like Arc Raiders and Escape from Tarkov. This mode appears to be a unique addition, offering a different competitive experience.
The release of Marathon on March 5, 2026 is getting closer, and excitement is building. Bungie is increasing its marketing as they prepare for a preview event next weekend. But even before that, details about the game are starting to appear online through leaks.
The biggest news is a new ranked mode, and it’s shaping up to be different from what other popular games in this style offer. Instead of just using your gear in deathmatches or completing weekly tasks – like you do in games such as Tarkov and Arc Raiders – Marathon seems to be taking things to the next level.
If the recent leaks are accurate, a new ranked mode is coming that will really put your skills – and your team’s – to the test. Here’s a breakdown of how it’s expected to work, based on the information that’s been shared.
Marathon leak reveals intense Ranked Mode
MP1st, a trusted gaming news source, reported information discovered by well-known data miner and leaker, X0X_Leak.
According to the source, Ranked Mode in Marathon works as follows.
Players are divided into six ranks, from Bronze all the way up to Pinnacle. There’s also some mention of a Master Rank, which might be for the very best players – similar to a top 500 leaderboard. Each rank is further split into three tiers, allowing for more precise progression.
You climb the ranks by finding valuable items during matches. Each time you play, you’ll have a loot value goal. Reaching that goal will get you a small rank increase, but exceeding it will significantly boost your progress.
If you don’t successfully capture the objective, you’ll lose rank points, so every round matters a lot.

Okay, so there are a couple of things to know about where you can play. Basically, if you’re ranked Bronze to Gold, you’ll be sticking to the Low-Stakes Zones. But once you hit Platinum and climb all the way to Pinnacle, that’s when you unlock the High-Stakes Zones – and you get to stay there! It’s a nice reward for ranking up, honestly.
Before you can start a Ranked match, you’ll need equipment that meets the minimum gear score. Remember that playing with valuable items always carries some risk, as you could lose them if you’re defeated.
The leak also suggests you’ll need to buy a Holotag. These tags are very valuable, and if you defeat another player and take theirs, you’ll instantly get a large amount of Credits and increase the potential rewards you can earn during the match.
The areas you can explore will change every week. You can venture into some areas on your own, but others will need a group to complete.
Players can earn rewards like cosmetic items. Some of these will be usable immediately, and others will be given out when the season ends.
This game feels unlike anything else we’ve played in the extraction shooter genre. Whether Marathon’s new approach will be successful remains to be seen, but we’re eager to jump in and test it out ourselves.
