He completed their shared dream after her death. Old-style niche MMO has a soul that the giants lack

After nearly eight years of development, Project: Gorgon officially launched its 1.0 update yesterday, leaving Early Access behind. The game is a classic-style MMORPG made by experienced developers in the genre.

What is Project: Gorgon?

Project: Gorgon is designed for players who fondly remember the early days of online role-playing games, before World of Warcraft became dominant. It was created by Eric Heimburg and Sandra Power, both veterans of classic games like EverQuest 1 and 2, and Asheron’s Call. Sadly, Sandra Power passed away in 2025 after a three-year fight with cancer, but Eric Heimburg finished the game as a tribute to their shared vision.

Project Gorgon is different from many modern MMORPGs, sticking to classic game design. It doesn’t offer much guidance, encouraging players to figure things out for themselves. You’ll have a lot of freedom, but your choices matter and have real consequences. The game focuses on player skill and requires a significant amount of effort to progress.

Project: Gorgon really focuses on bringing players together, recreating the strong community feel that older MMORPGs were known for, before many became more focused on individual play. Players will be able to control things like the game’s economy and run their own shops. The developers have built in lots of ways for players to connect and interact with each other.

This strategy appears to be working well. While the game hasn’t become hugely popular on Steam, it’s built a loyal fanbase that’s been playing consistently since launch. Plus, the reviews are very positive – with over 2,500 ratings, 86% of players recommend it.

The 1.0 update brings a wealth of new content to the game. Players can enjoy updated character models, redesigned trading posts, changes to existing maps, and a brand-new capital city called Statehelm. Statehelm is the largest and most detailed map created for the game, designed as a central hub for experienced players. It features over 200 quests, along with new skills and gameplay mechanics.

You can currently get Project: Gorgon on Steam for $18.74 – this offer ends on February 4th. There’s also a demo you can try, which lets you play up to level 15.
