Final Fantasy XI bug forces Square Enix staff to slay bosses for players

Square Enix had to intervene in Final Fantasy XI when a glitch caused defeated bosses to reappear. Their staff actually had to eliminate these revived bosses for players.

A recent issue in Final Fantasy XI allows powerful bosses, called Notorious Monsters, to reappear even after being defeated. As reported by Automaton, this bug is caused by a server error that makes the game ‘forget’ which bosses have already been beaten. These monsters are designed to be challenging and require multiple players to defeat.

Square Enix explained that data tracking monster defeats was accidentally erased, so they currently can’t determine which monsters have been defeated or if they’ve reappeared.

This is a significant issue because the game relies on accurate boss completion data to determine player rewards. If a boss is incorrectly marked as not defeated, it could reduce the rewards for everyone on a server. That’s why Square Enix staff are stepping in to help.

Square Enix addresses bug in most direct way possible

To ensure players aren’t unfairly punished, Square Enix is marking all powerful monsters as defeated for now. Instead of using an automatic system, they’re doing something unique: having real Game Masters personally defeat each monster.

Between January 29th and 30th, Square Enix employees will personally defeat all of the troublesome Notorious Monsters in each game world.

Players interested in continuing to battle monsters for fun or to collect special items should do so quickly, as the Game Master will soon be eliminating them from the servers.

Square Enix has fixed the issue that was causing players to lose their progress. As a result, players might now have a unique chance to witness the game’s developers, known as Monster Hunters, actively working on the game.
