While large language models (LLMs) promise broad accessibility, their impact on neurodiverse communities remains critically underexplored. This research, titled ‘”I use ChatGPT to humanize my words”: Affordances and Risks of ChatGPT to Autistic Users’, investigates how autistic individuals experience LLMs like ChatGPT through an analysis of nearly 4,000 social media posts. We found that while users leverage these tools for cognitive support, emotional regulation, and navigating social communication, these benefits are counterbalanced by risks of reinforcing problematic thought patterns and eroding authentic self-expression. How can neuro-inclusive design principles mitigate these tensions and harness the potential of LLMs to genuinely empower autistic users?

The data indicated a strong correlation between expressed difficulties in these areas and requests for assistance with everyday tasks, demonstrating the potential for ChatGPT to function as a personalized assistive technology.
Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning, implemented within ChatGPT, functions by prompting the model to articulate the intermediate steps in its reasoning process when responding to a social scenario. This contrasts with direct question-answering and enables the system to deconstruct complex social interactions into a series of smaller, more readily understandable components. By explicitly detailing the logical progression – identifying the context, interpreting cues, considering potential responses, and anticipating outcomes – CoT facilitates a more transparent and accessible analysis of the situation. This stepwise approach supports users in comprehending the underlying dynamics of the scenario and formulating appropriate responses, effectively reducing the cognitive burden associated with social processing.
The User’s Voice: Insights from Social Media Data
An inductive thematic analysis was conducted on a dataset of 3,984 social media posts to explore user experiences with ChatGPT, specifically focusing on perspectives from autistic individuals. This methodology involved an iterative process of coding and theme development directly from the data, without predefined theoretical frameworks. The dataset comprised user-generated content allowing for the identification of emergent patterns regarding the benefits, challenges, and nuances of interacting with the language model. Initial coding yielded 239 codes related to perceived affordances and 50 codes pertaining to potential risks, demonstrating a wide spectrum of reported experiences. This approach prioritized understanding the lived experiences of autistic users as expressed in their own language, rather than imposing external interpretations.

For example, a prompt might ask “What assumptions does this response make?” or “Can you identify any potential biases in this explanation?” before delivering its answer. This approach doesn’t aim to prevent information delivery, but rather to interject a moment of pause and reflection, compelling the user to independently assess the validity and reliability of the generated content. The goal is to shift the interaction from passive acceptance to active evaluation, fostering a more discerning and empowered user experience.
Effective communication hinges on mutual understanding, yet often overlooks the diverse ways individuals process and express information. A bidirectional translation approach, when applied to artificial intelligence interactions, moves beyond simply decoding language; it actively considers the contrasting communication styles of neurotypical and autistic individuals. This isn’t about simplifying speech, but rather recognizing that directness, literal interpretation, and a focus on detail – common traits in autistic communication – can be misinterpreted by those accustomed to nuanced or indirect language, and vice versa. By designing AI systems that can ‘translate’ between these styles, acknowledging and respecting both, genuine connection and reduced miscommunication become attainable, fostering a more inclusive and effective interactive experience. This approach prioritizes clarity and avoids assumptions about shared understanding, ultimately leading to more meaningful and equitable AI interactions.
Ethical AI design necessitates a careful consideration of potential impacts on vulnerable cognitive states and deeply held moral convictions. Research highlights the risk of artificially intelligent systems inadvertently reinforcing delusional thinking patterns or, critically, clashing with an individual’s strong autistic sense of justice – a highly developed and internally consistent moral framework. To address this, a rigorous validation pipeline was established, achieving perfect inter-rater reliability (1.00) in assessing the relevance of ChatGPT responses and a high degree of agreement (0.91) regarding their appropriateness for autistic individuals. This pipeline ensures that interactions are not only logically sound but also respectful of diverse cognitive and ethical perspectives, preventing AI from unintentionally exacerbating existing vulnerabilities or causing undue distress through moral contradiction.
The study illuminates how autistic individuals navigate the complexities of LLMs, revealing a delicate dance between scaffolding and self-alteration. The cycle continues, as everything built will, inevitably, start fixing itself – or, perhaps, demand a new kind of repair.
What Lies Ahead?
The exploration of Large Language Models as cognitive companions for autistic individuals reveals, predictably, that the tool does not solve the problem. It becomes the problem, or rather, a new facet of it. The research suggests these systems offer scaffolding, yet simultaneously threaten the fragile architecture of self. Every prompt is a negotiation, every generated text a potential echo chamber. It is not a question of ‘fixing’ the model, but acknowledging that any such system will inevitably reflect, and therefore amplify, the user’s existing internal landscape – for good or ill.
Future work will not be measured in improvements to algorithms, but in the granularity with which these interactions are observed. The current focus on affordances and risks feels…broad. The subtle shifts in internal monologue, the reinforcement of idiosyncratic thought patterns – these are the things that will truly define the long-term impact. The study of masking, so central to the autistic experience, now finds a strange new mirror. Is the model helping to navigate a neurotypical world, or simply building a more convincing performance?
One suspects the answer is both, and that is the most unsettling possibility of all. The system doesn’t offer solutions; it offers increasingly complex layers of mediation.
