Next month, Paramount+ will be adding the classic “Godfather” trilogy – three of the most beloved movies ever made – for its subscribers to stream.
February 1st is set to be a great day for Paramount+ users, with many new movies and TV shows being added to the service. Highlights include all three films in Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic Godfather trilogy. While The Godfather Part II is widely considered a masterpiece, The Godfather Part III received a less enthusiastic response when it was released in 1990.
Both The Godfather and The Godfather, Part II are coming to Paramount+ in their original theater versions. However, the third film will be different. Starting February 1st, Paramount+ will stream The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, a director’s cut of the 1990 movie. This version, released in 2020, is believed to be closer to Francis Ford Coppola’s initial idea for the film and received much better reviews than the original, though it still isn’t as highly regarded as the first two Godfather movies.
The Godfather films received a total of 28 Academy Award nominations and won nine, including Best Picture for both Part I and Part II. While Part III earned seven nominations, it didn’t win any awards. This impressive record solidifies the Godfather series as a landmark achievement in Hollywood history.
The Godfather Is Still Iconic More Than 50 Years Later
I still can’t believe it’s been over fifty years since The Godfather came out! It and the movie that followed aren’t just remembered, people truly see them as some of the best and most influential films ever made. What’s really interesting is the story they tell – a powerful person falling from grace – because we’ve seen that theme so many times since, in shows like The Sopranos and Breaking Bad, and even in movies like Scarface. It’s a story that’s always resonated with audiences, way before The Godfather and it still does today. It feels like this kind of story will always be popular.
The acting in The Godfather trilogy remains legendary, with Marlon Brando’s performance as Vito Corleone widely considered one of the greatest in cinematic history. It’s been endlessly imitated and referenced since its release. The miniseries Waltzing With Brando even dedicates significant time to recreating this iconic portrayal, featuring Billy Zane as Brando. Robert De Niro also played a younger Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II. This makes Brando and De Niro the first actors to each win an Oscar for playing the same character.
The Godfather and its sequels consistently rank among the most influential films for both new and established filmmakers – even those who are now major figures in Hollywood. Many filmmakers cite it as an early inspiration, and over fifty years later, it continues to influence some of today’s best movies.
Fans of The Godfather will be happy to hear the complete trilogy is coming back to Paramount+ and will be easier for subscribers to watch.
The Godfather trilogy will be available to stream on Paramount+ beginning Feb. 1.
