Marvel Officially Addresses Wonder Man’s MCU Future After Disney+ Series

Marvel Studios has given fans a promising update about the future of Wonder Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will first appear as Wonder Man in a special presentation, separate from the main storyline, allowing for a fresh start. This project will also bring back Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery, his character from Iron Man 3. Fans are hoping Wonder Man receives more immediate follow-up than other recent heroes like Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and Shang-Chi, who haven’t appeared in new projects since their debuts.

Official details about the Wonder Man series from Marvel Television explained what’s next for Simon Williams after the events of his previous show. While Marvel hasn’t ruled out future connections to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, watching other MCU projects isn’t necessary to enjoy Wonder Man.

In a recent interview with ComicBook, showrunner Andrew Guest explained the studio’s approach is to create self-contained projects. This allows them to see if viewers enjoy them and then decide whether to continue developing stories with those characters or concepts.

Marvel seems to be focusing on creating individual projects that can succeed on their own. If audiences enjoy a particular story or character, they’ll then explore ways to continue using them in future projects.

The guest pointed to Ben Kingsley’s portrayal of Trevor Slattery as a great example of this approach, and expressed hope that Robin Williams’ legacy will continue through future work.

Many viewers likely assumed Trevor Slattery’s story ended with Iron Man 3, but director Destin Daniel Cretton brought him back for Shang-Chi and revealed a new dimension to the character. I was really excited to revisit that role, and I hope audiences connect with Simon Williams so he can continue to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While Marvel doesn’t currently have plans to connect the Wonder Man series to its larger universe, there’s still a chance for a second season. Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum said a Season 2 is possible, depending on how many people watch the show. Marvel is focusing on creating series, like Daredevil: Born Again and X-Men ’97, that can run for several seasons.

It remains to be seen if Wonder Man will be popular enough to earn a second season, considering its lead character isn’t as well-known and the show has a more contained scope. However, there’s reason to be hopeful, as Wonder Man currently boasts a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the second-highest-rated live-action Marvel series so far.

What Comes Next for Wonder Man After His Disney+ Debut?

Though Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s character, Simon Williams, has demonstrated four different powers in the Disney+ series, he isn’t quite a superhero yet. Currently, it seems he’s simply an actor portraying the fictional hero Wonder Man within the show’s universe, unless the series has some big surprises in store.

Marvel Studios has a few obstacles to overcome before Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s character could realistically become an Avenger or work with other heroes, and that depends on how the Wonder Man show ends. These challenges could be explored in a possible second season, potentially shifting the focus from a story about actors to a classic superhero origin story, all while keeping the show’s original feel.

It feels like everyone’s just discovering Williams now, but for me, as a fan following his career, it’s been a while! He actually filmed Wonder Man way back from March 2023 to April 2024. There was a break in filming because of the strikes, but he finished up that Disney+ series almost two years ago, which is pretty wild to think about!

Viewers of the Wonder Man series likely won’t find any hints about upcoming Marvel events like Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars. It doesn’t appear that the character will be joining the Avengers team in the near future either. Unless plans change, we probably won’t see him again until a potential second season of Wonder Man, assuming it’s renewed.

A potential storyline for Wonder Man involves him teaming up with heroes like She-Hulk, Shang-Chi, Ant-Man, and War Machine. Together, they would form a new version of the Avengers, based in Los Angeles, acting as a West Coast counterpart to the main team.
