A new comic series, Maul: Shadow Lord, will bring Darth Maul and Darth Vader together for the first time in official Star Wars history. Though both villains were powerful during the same period – from the fall of the Republic through the early days of the Galactic Civil War – they’ve never actually clashed in any officially recognized story until now.
Darth Maul and Darth Vader did battle in the older Star Wars Legends stories, but that fight isn’t considered part of the official story anymore since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. Within the current official timeline, the closest they ever came to crossing paths was in Star Wars Rebels, where Maul brought Ezra Bridger to an ancient Sith temple in search of a valuable artifact. But now, Star Wars might finally be setting the stage for a confrontation between these two powerful dark side characters.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Is Setting Up Maul Vs. Vader
The initial trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord introduced the new animated Star Wars series. The show will focus on Maul rebuilding his criminal organization, the Shadow Collective, and taking over the criminal underworld. In the trailer, Marrok, an Inquisitor serving Darth Vader, informs Maul that Emperor Palpatine has ordered his assassination, likely because of his criminal activities and history as a Sith Lord.
As a huge Star Wars fan, just from the trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord, it’s obvious Maul’s going to be battling both the Inquisitors and the entire Empire. And honestly, that’s the perfect setup for the showdown we’ve all been waiting for: Maul versus Darth Vader! I’m pretty sure Maul will either beat or escape whatever Inquisitors Palpatine sends after him, but if the Emperor really wants him gone, I have a feeling Vader will be the one sent to finish the job. After all, Vader’s in charge of the Inquisitors and basically Palpatine’s enforcer.
We Know That Maul Loses Everything To The Empire
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always thought the possibility of Maul facing off against Vader was intriguing, and his overall story really strengthens that idea. Knowing that, by the time Rebels rolls around – just a few years before the original movie – Maul has basically lost everything to the Empire makes it even more compelling. When Ezra Bridger finds him around 3 BBY, he’s completely isolated, almost losing his mind, and desperately searching for that ancient Sith holocron. It paints a really tragic picture and makes you understand why he’d be so driven to regain some power, even if it meant confronting Vader.
By the time of Star Wars Rebels, Maul is no longer in charge of the Shadow Collective or holding any significant power, meaning he must have been overthrown as the ruler of the criminal underworld. The upcoming Maul: Shadow Lord story will likely depict his ultimate defeat, and Darth Vader is the ideal character to deliver it. No regular Inquisitor could convincingly defeat Maul, and Palpatine would simply kill him. Only Vader possesses the ability to both defeat Maul and dismantle his criminal organization while leaving him alive.
How Darth Maul Vs. Darth Vader Played Out In Legends
While Maul and Darth Vader did clash in older Star Wars stories (now called Legends), the upcoming comic Maul: Shadow Lord is setting up a very different kind of confrontation. In those previous stories, Maul was brought back to life by dark side followers who believed Vader didn’t deserve to be Palpatine’s apprentice, because of his history as a Jedi. They tricked Vader into going to the planet Kalakar Six, hoping Maul would kill him and take his place.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I always thought the duel between Vader and Maul on Kalakar Six was incredibly intense, even though we kind of knew how it would end. They fought for a long time, really getting into a debate about who was the real Sith and everything, but ultimately Vader won in a shocking way – he basically impaled himself with his own lightsaber, since Maul had him cornered from behind! It’s a legendary comic book battle, packed with action, drama, and suspense, and honestly, it’s a perfect blueprint for what the Maul: Shadow Lord story could be.
