Pokimane lashes out at inappropriate AI deepfakes on social media

Popular Twitch streamer Pokimane has criticized the growing practice of people using artificial intelligence to create harmful and inappropriate fake images and videos of women online.

Recently, X has faced criticism because its Grok AI tool was being misused to create inappropriate and manipulated photos of people, especially women.

Many users requested that Grok modify women’s selfies, adding bikinis or lingerie and creating sexually suggestive images without the women’s permission. This turned harmless photos into inappropriate content.

The situation became critical when the UK and Australia considered banning the app altogether. This led X to initially restrict access to Grok’s image creation features to paying subscribers. Eventually, the app stopped Grok from inappropriately changing photos of people entirely.

Despite these safety measures, some people are still finding ways to bypass them or are using different AI tools to achieve their goals. Several popular influencers have voiced concerns, suggesting this could lead to women being afraid to share photos or videos on the app, fearing their content might be altered.

Pokimane speaks out against trend using AI to edit women’s photos

Popular Twitch streamer Pokimane has spoken out against the growing problem of AI being used to change people’s photos without their consent. She recently posted a 3-minute video on TikTok criticizing this practice.

She stated the situation has clearly deteriorated, particularly because one specific platform isn’t just allowing the images to spread, but actually provides tools for people to make them. While she didn’t mention it by name, she was clearly referring to X.

Honestly, I’m really frustrated with how slowly things are moving when it comes to new laws. It feels like lawmakers are barely keeping up – technology and especially AI are advancing so incredibly fast, it’s like comparing a snail to a speeding torpedo! It’s just a huge gap, and it’s worrying me as a fan of responsible innovation.

I was really shocked to hear that the streamer has spent thousands of dollars just to get inappropriate, fake content of herself removed from the internet. She pointed out that, thankfully, she’s been financially able to deal with it, which isn’t the case for a lot of other people who go through the same thing. It’s awful that she even has to spend money on this, but it’s good she can, and she recognizes how lucky she is compared to others.

“From a personal perspective, it’s really jarring to see inappropriate photos of yourself, even if they’re not real,” she continued. “It pains me that there are people who think this should be okay or it isn’t a big deal.”

Pokimane ended her video by telling women who’ve been affected by these kinds of trends that they’re not alone, and that it’s not their fault if someone else alters their photos in a harmful way.

Viewers have applauded Poki’s video, with many suggesting she pursue legal options against those involved. However, Poki argues it’s unfair to expect victims to bear the financial burden – potentially thousands of dollars – to remove content that should never have been created in the first place.

Following an interview with Sweet Anita, popular streamer Pokimane has also voiced concerns about X’s Grok AI using user data. Sweet Anita suggested a simple way to fix the issue: an option for users to prevent their content from being used by the AI.
