The latest Valorant update, version 12.01, now requires some players to enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) for competitive matches. This change doesn’t apply to everyone, though.
Recently, Riot Games has been actively working to combat smurfing and boosting in Valorant, specifically targeting players with multiple accounts. They first announced plans in May to add multi-factor authentication for some accounts as part of this effort.
The update requiring multi-factor authentication (MFA) went live in October with patch 11.09. Riot Games stated that this applied to accounts identified as shared, suspected of being used by multiple players, or those ranked Ascendant or higher in North America, Latin America, Brazil, and Korea.
With multi-factor authentication now turned on, players can once again access Competitive mode. The recent 12.01 update will finally bring this change to players in Europe.
EU Valorant players finally have to use MFA
Starting with the 12.01 update, Riot Games is requiring European players at the Ascendant rank or higher to enable multi-factor authentication. This also applies to accounts flagged as shared or suspected of being used by multiple people.
The process for verification is unchanged. You’ll either need to confirm your account through an email link or by using the Riot mobile app.
You need to enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) before you can play in Competitive playlists.

The 12.01 update also includes numerous bug fixes for various agents. One fix addresses an issue where ability icons wouldn’t refresh correctly if an agent repeatedly applied the same debuff to a player.
