James Gunn Debunks Wonder Woman and Batman Roles in ‘Man of Tomorrow’

James Gunn is now casting for Man of Tomorrow, the next film after his successful Superman movie. Following the news that Lars Eidinger will play the villain Brainiac, fans are excitedly guessing which other DC characters might appear. Since Superman included a variety of DC heroes like Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner, and Hawkgirl, viewers are expecting more heroes to show up in Man of Tomorrow. The most talked-about possibilities are Batman and Wonder Woman, who, along with Superman, make up the DC Trinity and both have upcoming projects within the DC Universe.

James Gunn has dismissed recent casting rumors surrounding Batman and Wonder Woman in the upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow. He responded to a fan on Threads (via Home of DCU on X) stating that reports of auditions for these characters are untrue. When asked specifically about Wonder Woman being the female character being cast, Gunn confirmed that wasn’t the case, suggesting that online speculation was simply guesswork.

Fans are excited to see Batman and Wonder Woman join the new DC Universe (DCU). Wonder Woman will be getting her own standalone movie, which will be a fresh start for the character after Gal Gadot’s previous films. The script is being written by Ana Nogueira, who also worked on Supergirl. Since Wonder Woman won’t be in the Man of Tomorrow movie, the filmmakers have a lot of options for other female characters to include, such as Maxima, Renee Montoya, or Big Barda, who will also appear in the animated series Mister Miracle.

The upcoming Batman movie in the DC Universe will be called The Brave and the Bold and will star Batman alongside his son, Damian Wayne, who is also known as Robin. Production has been slightly delayed, and James Gunn explained that they didn’t want news about the new Batman to take attention away from The Batman – Part II, which is scheduled to come out in October 2027. This probably means we won’t see the DCU Batman until at least 2028, although some fans are hoping for a quick glimpse of the character later this year in the Clayface film.

It was smart of James Gunn to leave Batman and Wonder Woman out of Man of Tomorrow. Including them would have inevitably drawn comparisons to Batman v. Superman, which was already a sequel to Man of Steel that awkwardly featured Batman and shoehorned in Wonder Woman to build towards her own movie. Considering how negatively Batman v. Superman was received, and how it ultimately shifted focus from a Superman sequel to setting up Justice League, it wouldn’t have been a good move for Man of Tomorrow – another Superman follow-up – to become another stepping stone towards a larger DC Universe team-up film.
