The show recently concluded after five seasons and nearly ten years on air. Although the finale felt appropriate given the show’s themes and world, it sparked a lot of debate and disagreement.
Viewers were surprised by the long epilogue in the final episode, which showed what happened to all the characters, and many felt it wasn’t a true ending. This led to rumors of a hidden, extra episode. While that didn’t happen, Saturday Night Live did create additional content inspired by Stranger Things, though it isn’t considered official storyline.
Finn Wolfhard, known for his role as Mike Wheeler in all five seasons of Stranger Things, recently hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live. He appeared in multiple sketches, including one that reunited him with his Stranger Things co-stars Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) and Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas).
The four-minute sketch, called “Stranger Things Promo,” playfully suggests that even though the main show is finished, it’s not truly over within the world of Saturday Night Live thanks to potential spinoffs.
The show Stranger Things concluded after five amazing seasons, as announced in a voiceover. The announcement playfully suggested that Netflix realized the show’s popularity meant it shouldn’t end, using scenes from the last episode to hint at its continuation.
The preview announced that Stranger Things will expand with more stories, including sequels, prequels, and spinoffs. It revealed that a new show centered around Steve Harrington will kick things off. Plus, Nancy Wheeler will star in her own spinoff, The Wheeler Report, which will focus on solving major crimes from the 1990s.
Mike Wheeler is getting his own show, called Mike in Manhattan, which is inspired by Sex and the City. The show follows him as he moves to New York City to pursue a career as a writer. The sketch also brought back Gaten Matarazzo and Caleb McLaughlin. While Noah Schnapp didn’t appear in the skit, his character, Will Byers, was mentioned – the joke being that his coming-out story is still unfolding.
The world of SNL-inspired shows keeps expanding with new series for almost every character, even one dedicated to Mike’s dad. The episode also includes a nostalgic moment, bringing back Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, and Caleb McLaughlin in their original costumes, hinting at a final episode that wasn’t quite what it seemed.
Stranger Things Will Continue
Even though the main story has finished and we know what happens with all the characters, the world of the show isn’t over yet. Because Stranger Things has been so popular, Netflix is already planning more content for the future.
A new animated series, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, is coming to Netflix in 2026. It will be set between seasons two and three of Stranger Things and feature familiar characters that fans love.
Additionally, a new project is in the works. Though specifics are scarce, Ross Duffer has stated it won’t follow the stories of the characters we know from Hawkins.
While this new installment features different characters and a different setting, it still has some ties to the original series. However, our main goal was to bring the story of Hawkins, the Upside Down, and these characters to a definitive conclusion and provide a sense of closure.
