Stellan Skarsgård Blasts Donald Trump’s “Absurd” Greenland Demands

Actor Stellan Skarsgård, who is Swedish and whose country neighbors Greenland-governed Denmark, jokingly dismissed former US President Donald Trump’s repeated interest in buying Greenland. Skarsgård made the comments while at the European Film Awards in Berlin on January 17th, where reporters asked for his opinion on the Trump administration’s unusual diplomatic efforts.

The controversial leader announced he would impose a 25% trade tariff on eight European nations – Denmark, Norway, France, Germany, Britain, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Finland – unless the US could acquire Greenland. According to Deadline, the European Union is holding an emergency meeting today to discuss what they are calling this “blackmail.” While the leader has stated his interest in Greenland stems from strategic military goals, many believe he’s primarily interested in the territory’s natural resources.

It’s ridiculous, really. This man has become power-mad and is attempting to dominate the world. He seized control of Venezuela, seemingly to benefit Chevron, and now he’s setting his sights on Greenland for its natural resources. He’s acting like a common criminal.

Joachim Trier, the director of Skarsgård’s Sentimental Value (who is Danish-Norwegian), also expressed concerns about the possibility of Greenland being sold. He agreed with Stellan Skarsgård that the idea is ridiculous and that international law should be upheld, explaining that disregarding it could set a dangerous precedent for how powerful nations treat other countries. He described the potential consequences as deeply worrying.

This follows criticism from Mark Ruffalo and Judd Apatow of Donald Trump during last weekend’s Golden Globe Awards. While presenting the award for Best Director – which went to Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another – Apatow stated his view that the United States is “now a dictatorship.”

At a recent red carpet event, actor Mark Ruffalo wore a pin honoring Renee Good, who was tragically killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis just a couple of weeks ago. According to USA Today, Ruffalo also pointed out that the U.S. is currently involved in tensions with Venezuela, initiated by what he described as an illegal invasion under the previous administration. He strongly criticized the leader, stating they disregard international law and prioritize their own beliefs, and further characterized them with serious accusations including being a convicted criminal and a dangerous individual. Ruffalo expressed deep concern that relying on this person’s judgment for a nation as powerful as the U.S. could have dire consequences.
