Saturday Night Live kicked off 2026 with a strong new episode, featuring Finn Wolfhard as host and ASAP Rocky as the musical guest. Given Wolfhard’s role in Stranger Things, the show naturally poked fun at the recently concluded series. A sketch specifically addressed the potential for spinoffs, and cleverly touched on what many fans were likely wondering about Will’s coming out moment.
During his appearance on Saturday Night Live, Finn Wolfhard presented a funny sketch with several ideas for Stranger Things spinoff shows. These included a series where Steve Harrington becomes a teacher in an urban setting, similar to the movie Dangerous Minds, and another following Nancy Wheeler as a determined investigative journalist. The sketch also imagined Mike Wheeler moving to 1990s New York to pursue a career as a writer in a show called Mike in Manhattan. The sketch also featured some surprise guest appearances.
I find the idea of a Sex and the Citystyle spin-off starring Mike Wheeler hilarious. It’s also great to see Finn Wolfhard’s Stranger Things* co-stars, Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo, appear in the sketch with him. Interestingly, their friend Will Byers isn’t included, and the reason, as explained in the sketch, is that his character is still going through the process of coming out. Jeremy Culhane plays Will in this particular segment.

In the final season of Stranger Things, Will Byers bravely came out to his loved ones and received a supportive response. While the scene was touching and a fitting conclusion to Will’s storyline throughout Season 5, it’s easy to see why Saturday Night Live created a parody of it. The original scene felt a little lengthy to some viewers, and the sketch seems to playfully exaggerate the dialogue, which many felt was overly drawn out.

Upcoming SNL Hosts And Musical Guests, The Saturday Night Live Season 51 Cast And More
Leaving aside the joke sketch about Will Byers, it makes sense that Netflix is planning more shows set in the world of Stranger Things. Don’t expect the ideas from Saturday Night Live to actually happen, but an animated spinoff called Tales from ‘85 is coming out this year. There’s also a live-action spinoff in development, and even though the show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, are moving on from Netflix, they’ll still be involved as consultants.
It seems Wolfhard’s sketch was mostly just a playful jab at the idea of continuing the series, and the exaggerated criticisms really stand out. His comments about Will’s scene are fair, though it’s understandable why that scene might be important to some fans. Ultimately, it’s great that Wolfhard and his collaborators were able to jokingly address the show that launched his career.
I was so excited to see Finn Wolfhard on Saturday Night Live! You can watch his whole episode if you have a Peacock subscription. And if you’re a Stranger Things fan like me, the entire series is available to stream on Netflix right now!
