The Rookie Is Running Out Of Time With An Original Character

Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Rookie season 8, episode 2, “Fast Andy.”

In season 8 of The Rookie, one of the show’s main characters is facing a tough situation with the Mid-Wilshire Division. The series has returned to ABC after a break, kicking off with a big international storyline. The second episode begins to establish the show’s new direction, but is complicated by a visit from the President to Los Angeles.

As a huge fan of The Rookie, I was totally hooked by that season 8 premiere case with Monica! It’s led to some big changes. FBI agent Matt Garza was looking for someone from our team in Mid-Wilshire to work with the bureau on the investigation, and he first approached Nyla Harper. It sounded like a great opportunity, but she had to decline. So, Garza then offered the role to Wade Grey, who, after a really honest talk with his wife, decided to take it. But things move fast in this world – it looks like Tim Bradford has already stepped up and taken over as Watch Commander, replacing Grey!

Grey’s New Job Set Him Up For A Permanent Departure From Mid-Wilshire

Grey simply switched roles, and there’s nothing to suggest he plans to leave. He keeps reminding Tim that his office hasn’t changed, while they discuss the shift in duties. Even so, this is a big deal for the team, as he’s been their leader for the entire series.

Considering his current work and collaboration with the FBI, he could very well be offered a more senior role, possibly within the bureau, if he and Garza continue to perform well. This feels like a natural progression for his career right now. Returning to his previous position would create complications and disrupt the established chain of command. This idea is briefly explored in The Rookie season 8, episode 2, when he temporarily takes over for Bradford during the President’s visit.

How Grey’s Potential Exit Changes The Rookie’s Future

The decision to gradually move The Rookie beyond the character of Grey is a curious one. Typically, when a character leaves a show, it’s either planned well in advance with a clear ending in sight, or it happens suddenly for dramatic effect, particularly on network television. According to The Rookie‘s creator, Alexi Hawley, this change is simply intended to revitalize the series and keep things interesting. However, considering Grey’s storylines both at work and in his personal life, it’s hard not to feel like his departure is inevitable.

If Grey does leave Mid-Wilshire, he’ll be greatly missed. While Bradford is well-liked, he doesn’t have the same long-standing history with the team as Grey, who has been a strong leader. Saying goodbye is never easy, but at least The Rookie is giving the character a fitting farewell. Although Grey’s role may be smaller as he works with the FBI, he’s still expected to appear on the show.
